Maine a step closer to no-permit concealed handguns

Maine a step closer to no-permit concealed handguns

The House joins the Senate in approving the change in initial votes, overcoming public safety concerns and keeping Maine on the path of becoming the seventh state to allow the practice.

By Steve Mistler Staff Writer

Tom Franklin, president of Maine Citizens Against Handgun Violence, predicted that passage will lead to more street violence and deaths. The group works to prevent gun violence through gun safety and education.

David Trahan, executive director of the Sportsman’s Alliance of Maine, said his organization, which represents about 10,000 Maine sportsmen and gun owners, supports the legislation.

He said two factors contributed to its apparent passage – the support of the Maine State Police, and out-of-state interest groups trying to influence legislators.

“Maine people don’t like it when money and power coming from out of state tries to influence their decision-making,” said Trahan, who served in the Legislature for 12 years. “That was a factor.”

“It’s angry rhetoric. And it’s just not true,” Trahan said of Franklin’s remarks.

An anti-gun proponent using angry rhetoric to say things that aren't true? I don't believe it.

Mister Franklin has said some telling things in other forums as well:

“When AK-47s and AR-15s become commonly used by criminals, it would make sense to restrict their purchase to buyers able to prove they are responsible and law-abiding, even though they may be useful for shooting bears or moose,” Franklin wrote. “These are extraordinarily minor inconveniences that we accept in order to live in a more safe and civilized community.

Except that, for starters, AK-47s and AR-15s aren't "commonly used by criminals".

Its clear, that like some of our colleagues in the other forum, Mr. Franklin proceeds from the standpoint that owning guns is a privilege rather than a right.

That doesn't even come close to being "reasonable" or "common sense".

Overall, good on Maine.

I'm pretty sure the brain trust, that uses cartoons as their primary form of dialog, has a patent on that usage.

So you may be getting a "Cease & Desist" snark post any minute from one of their 4 remaining participants.

And the idea that one might use a centerfire .22 to shoot bear or moose is ludicrous. The view over at Field and Stream seems to be that even a .270 (twice the muzzle energy of a .223) is marginal for moose or elk, and that the better minimum choice is probably .30-06 Springfield.

5. Remember that the AR-15 upper receiver has been expanded to quite a few larger calibers

Like this:

And that anti-gun types make no distinction between calibers. All it has to do is look scary.

The gun control extremists don't seem to be winning very many battles, I mean aside from preventing reasonable discussion and facts in their safe haven, who's population seems to be decreasing more and more.

But Maine is a BLUE state fer cryin' out loud! HOW CAN THIS BE?! OH THE COGNITIVE DISSONANCE!!

Oh......wait a minute. I just remembered that the true-blue states of Oregon and Washington allowed their citizens the right of concealed carry long before the gun-crazed states of Arizona and Texas did. And Vermont - beloved by progressives everywhere has been the least restrictive state vis-a-vis gun rights since.......FOREVER.

How embarrassing. Never mind.
