Cops: Boy, 3, shot self with gun he found in mother's purse

X-posted from the other group.

By DAN SEWELL(0) Comments
CINCINNATI (AP) — A 3-year-old boy had been playing with a handgun he found in his home before fatally shooting himself in the chest with it, police said Friday.

In audio tape of a 911 call released by Hamilton police, a woman identifying herself as the mother of Marques Green said she carried the gun in her purse and had set her purse down after getting home.

"My son just shot himself, and I'm not getting a pulse," Elizabeth Green screamed Thursday afternoon. "Oh, my God. Oh, my God. I'm not getting a pulse ... I don't think he's alive!"

It's the second apparently accidental gunshot death of a young person this month in Hamilton, a city of 62,000 people nearly 30 miles north of Cincinnati.

This is a tragedy that should have never happened, the mother left a firearm where this child could access it, she was responsible for this tragic death, yet, not one person in that whole thread is blaming the mother for this tragedy, they're all blaming the tool, the firearm.

3. A firearm is an inanimate object, it will just sit there until there is a human interaction

with it.
The fault lies with the mother for the death of this child, she left the weapon where the child could access it, that's negligence on her part and she should be charged with negligent homicide.

5. And then it makes killing very, very easy.

Like I said, another day, another dead kid.

That thing isn't going to make anybody safer. The biggest predictor of dying in gun violence is having a gun in the home.

6. The biggest predictor of dying by poison is having poison in the home.

Just like poisonous substances in the home, firearms should be secured in a safe manner when not in use.
Again, it wasn't the fault of the firearm for this tragic death, it was the fault of the mother for not securing her firearm in a safe manner.

African-Americans are 13% of the population but 55% of the firearm homicide victims. That makes an African-American about eight times as likely to die due to gun violence all by itself. And since more than 80% of firearm victims are male, it might be that the biggest predictor of dying of gun violence is simply "being a black man".

11. The last yearly data for accidental deaths-by-gun for children showed 62 killed. In the U.S.A..

A small fraction of several other common means of death, and the cause declining most rapidly.

Evidently, other causes of childhood death are more than "very, very easy." That includes drowning, electrocution, falls, poisoning, and several others causes.

13. But those other causes are not guns

Therefore a) existing laws and regulations are sufficient, b) the parents of these children are in no way culpable, and c) it's not newsworthy.

which might explain the precipitous drop in childhood accidental death rates by gun.

We childproof our houses for chemicals, medicine and electrical sockets. The same thing should be done with firearms. She will live with this forever and I think she should actually be charged for her negligence. There are great programs out there to help like this one....

Too bad those "gun safety" groups do not help out like the NSSF.

If this is you, you can't just set the purse down anymore.....EVER.

While we all can agree that off body carry is a horrible idea, for 1000's of women out there it's the only way they're willing to carry.

If your firearm is beyond arms reach, it's can't save/protect lives and could easily fall into the wrong hands. Lock it up if that's the case.

Stay safe, and carry on there's nothing more liberating than knowing you're capable of protecting yourself and family.
