Suburbs face lawsuit seeking tougher regulation of gun shops

An anti-violence coalition sued three suburban villages Tuesday, saying they need to do more to regulate gun stores whose weapons have been recovered in large numbers at crime scenes in low-income neighborhoods in Chicago.

The Rev. Michael Pfleger, pastor of St. Sabina Catholic Church, and the Rev. Robin Hood, a West Side pastor, are among the plaintiffs in the civil-rights lawsuit against the villages of Riverdale, Lyons and Lincolnwood.

Lyons officials said they already have met with Chicago police to address their concerns about a gun shop there, while an attorney for Lincolnwood said officials there could not see “any conceivable basis for liability” on the part of the village.

The lawsuit, filed in Cook County Circuit Court, says those villages have “lax or insufficient methods of administration in licensing and regulating gun dealers.”

Hopefully the group filing a bogus lawsuit will have to pay all the legal fees to the local governments they're trying to hassle.

3. "The Rev. Michael Pfleger, pastor of St. Sabina Catholic Church, and the Rev. Robin Hood..."

Is it suddenly cool for religious leaders to wholly bypass the legislative process in order to impose law via litigation?

It would make more sense if the plaintiffs could point to current law and show where the gun shops weren't abiding by those laws and/or the government knew the law was being flouted but failing to enforce it but you can't sue a government to create law out of thin air.

4. Wonder what the "support" would be if it was abortion providers?

But you know, GUNZ! and all.

After all if it's against guns and gun owners it must be good and after all, gun controllers don't have to pay for it, but the Archdiocese of Chicago will.

5. Imagine if the money spent by the municipalities to defend themselves could instead be spent on

updating NICS or other protections already in place/accessible.

If I were inclined to think gun control was about safety this would be a serious strategic blunder on the part of the Controllers; but I am free of such illusions so it makes their malfeasance all the more glaring.

17. This report makes no mention of a call for murder.

Emotions in a Chicago Catholic church ran high Thursday when the Illinois State Rifle Association urged members to voice their opinions during a talk given by Father Michael Pfleger, who has been outspoken about the role of the NRA and gun dealers in Chicago’s gun violence.

Pfleger spoke at St. George in Tinley Park wearing a red T-shirt covered in photos of people killed by guns over his priest’s collar. The ISRA urged as many members as possible to attend, calling the talk a gun control recruiting event, according to CBS Chicago.

People seated in the pews booed and cheered the priest as he started talking. Many also heckled attendees that sided with Father Pfleger, who is well-known on Chicago’s South Side.

“I want people who own guns to be held responsible for the guns that they own,” he told the crowd in a speech aired by WGN, denying that he is against the Second Amendment.

18. That, presumably, is why you posted it. This is the press release at the time.

ISRA: Chicago Priest Calls for Murder of Gun Shop Owner

SPRINGFIELD, Ill., May 29 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The following was
released today by the Illinois State Rifle Association (ISRA):
Nobody expected Saturday's Operation PUSH protest at Chuck's Gun Shop &
Range to be anything other than a circus of the bizarre. However, nobody
anticipated that an address by a Chicago priest would include a call for
the murder of a suburban gun shop owner and legislators who oppose gun
control.
During an address at an anti-gun rally in front of Chuck's, Rev.
Michael Pfleger, pastor of St. Sabina's Church, exhorted the crowd to
"drag" shop owner, John Riggio, from his shop "like a rat" and "snuff" him.
Rev. Pfleger went on to tell the crowd that legislators that vote against
gun control legislation should be "snuffed" as well. As many know, "snuff"
is slang for especially violent murder.
The ISRA has a recording of Pfleger's remarks in MP3 format.
"Certainly Fr. Pfleger has offered Absolution to a murderer or two
during his tenure as a priest," commented ISRA Executive Director, Richard
Pearson. "That's why it's shocking to hear him actually advocate the murder
of a gun shop owner who has never committed a crime in his life. He then
compounds the problem by calling for the murder of legislators who disagree
with his personal political views -- something I suspect is a felony in
this state. Pfleger's comments were disgusting and dangerous. And, I seem
to remember that the Fifth Commandment frowns on murdering one's neighbor."
"This week, I'll be penning a letter to the Archbishop, expressing my
concerns over Rev. Pfleger's comments," continued Pearson. "I would hope
that the Archbishop would reply with words of comfort for Mr. Riggio, his
family, state legislators, and all others who were injured by Rev.
Pfleger's thoughtless, inflammatory remarks."
The ISRA is the state's leading advocate of safe, lawful, and
responsible firearms ownership. Since 1903, the ISRA has represented the
interests of over 1.5 million law-abiding firearm Illinois firearm owners.

You're right, PRNewswire is not a reliable source and the only one making this claim is the Illinois State Rifle Association.

The video at the link I provided shows no call for murder.

Fox News & the ISRA are just manufacturing outrage.

The Reverend is calling for an end to gun sales, rather than ending the life of John Riggio.

22. The context - was an angry crowd trying to force their way into his store

Led by Flaky Pfleger and calling for the crowd to "Snuff Riggio out and all the politicians that support him". Yeah that sounds just like a call to end to gun sales.

Manufactured outrage my ass.

I was there, were you? I heard it first hand and he meant exactly what he said.

That's why he was arrested for criminal trespass and was held overnight in the slammer. No FOID card, no admittance to the gun store.

But so nice of you to re-interpret it for Pfleger though and just make stuff up so it's not quite as embarrassing to you and your fellow gun control "fans".

Pfleger is a media whore of the worst kind and has proven again and again that he cares far more about his own PR and state $$$ grants than he does about south side lives.

23. It was over-the-top and the response comparing him to ISIS was over-the-top, as well.

I understand his frustrations with addressing gun violence in Chicago.

It's good that he hasn't actually murdered or harmed anyone and is using the legal system to seek redress.

But the Illinois State Rifle Association is calling on its member to attend the rally and to buy a firearm to show support for the store. In a public notice, the ISRA wrote: "Few will forget Pfleger's rant in front of Chuck's several years ago when he called for the ISIS-style murders of gun-shop owners."

Pfleger calls the comparison "unacceptable." "When you identify me as a terrorist because I want responsible gun ownership, that takes it to another level," Pfleger said.

Anti-gun advocates point to a 2012 University of Chicago study that found Chuck's to be the No. 1 supplier of guns used in Chicago crimes over a four-year period.

"They've supplied over 1500 guns to criminals and prohibited purchasers," said Juan Altamirano of the Brady Campaign.

33. What NRA propaganda?

I know I advocate for gun safety classes. I would hope/expect you do as well. I suppose the NRA does that as well so maybe that is what you mean but that leaves you in the same boat as me.

You have claimed to accept that gun rights are an individual right; yet here you're complaining about equating gun rights to civil rights. Assuming you want your credibility to remain intact how do you separate the right of gun ownership from the civil right of self-defense?

I don't advocate more guns, I advocate people deciding for themselves -- as is their right with the presumption they are obligated to do so safely and responsibly -- which you presumably agree with.

So, if you are the self-appointed arbiter of all things RW or not-RW on which of these points do you find yourself and I differing?
