The American public as a whole are much more likely to favor stricter gun laws than gun owners

American opinion about guns and gun control hasn’t changed much in the last five years, but the latest Economist/YouGov Poll provides new information about how the public – gun owners and non-gun owners alike – viewed gun restrictions while the trial of the 2012 Aurora, Colorado theater shooter was in its penalty phase.

There are some limitations that gun owners would accept: they are just as likely as the public overall to support preventing those with a history of mental illness from owning guns. James Holmes, the Aurora shooter, while judged sane under Colorado law (defined as knowing the difference between right and wrong) was under psychiatric treatment and had legally purchased weapons he used in the shootings.

"How to start a petition". You can either start with petitions to repeal concealed carry, demand registration or go whole hog and outright repeal the 2nd amendment.

Be careful what powers you give to a hypothetical future president because the presidency will not always be held by a person you like and trust.

As for your poll, there are many things the American public has favored, dis-favored, and changed its mind on. Several things come to mind: Inter-racial marriage, GLBT marriage, alcohol prohibition, drug prohibition, etc. That's why we have a Constitution which recognizes certain rights which cannot be infringed and abridged -- no matter what or who favors such. And that is why we have the courts to determine when such infringement occurs.

Does the registry tie each gun to an individual?

What type of after registry laws are needed to make the registry effective in providing more safety or control?

Since 99+ percent of guns are never used in a crime or violence and in all likelihood the ones that are will not be registered, how long do you think it will take before the bad guns (unregistered) get filtered out of the system?

What sort of guarantees or safe guards would be tied to the registry to prevent gun confiscation from people law abiding enough to register their guns while the criminal guns are not being registered, ie law abiding gun owners disarmed while criminals are not?

Just curious if this is just aimed at another paper tiger (ignored action) or one with the intent to confiscate guns or is there a comprehensive plan that would register guns and protect law abiding gun owners and provide more safety to society?

There are way way more that don't like to be told told what they can and can't do, particularly beyond a certain point where things get stupid, than those that presume/want to be doing the telling, and I don't think anyone quite grasps how deep that sentiment runs in Americans at large.

History is replete with examples for those not too blind to see them.

If the purpose of the registry is merely the first step to disarm the public then no wonder gun folks are compelled to resist any additional controls as merely Trojan horses.

Opinions are only useful if they've been validated. My wife spent the last 40 years avoiding crushed red peppers on her pizza. Her opinion was that they would be too spicy for her. She finally tried them. She'd been wrong for 40 years.
