MDA opposes gun safety efforts for children.

https://www.yahoo.com/parenting/kindergarteners-get-gun-safety-lesson-at-school-183507921.html

I think what the school district is doing is fantastic, but pay attention to the response from Bloomberg's Moms group. If it doesn't involving banning or confiscating firearms of course they have no interest in it. MDA's motives are sickening. This program is optional and parents can also attend.

“This course isn’t pro-gun or anti-gun; we teach kids how to be safe around guns, and not to be passive bystanders,” fourth grade teacher Daniel Krestar, who teaches the course at Forest Hills Elementary School in Sidman, tells Yahoo Parenting. More than 80 percent of homeowners in the school’s Cambria County county own a gun, according to WTAJ, which profiled the local program this week.

Gun Stop was first introduced by the Cambria District Attorney’s office two decades ago, and is taught each October. In it, students in kindergarten and again in third grade are educated on what to do if they see a gun and how to engage in non-violent conflict resolution. “We wanted to teach the course because statistics showed that 80 percent of local home owners kept guns in their home,” says Krestar.

But according to Jennifer Hoppe, deputy director of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, a campaign of the Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund, the best way to reduce gun deaths among children is to be keep the weapons out of children’s hands altogether. “It’s atrocious to put the onus of gun safety onto children — this is an adult problem,” Hoppe tells Yahoo Parenting. “Every gun that’s gotten into the hands of a child has first been under the control of an adult. A program that tries to dodge that is disingenuous.”

I would agree that safe handling and recognition is preferable to ignorance.

The NRA's Eddie Eagle safety program is a great safety program for children, it in no way promotes firearms, it teaches children what to do in the event that they find an unsecured firearm, but because it's an NRA program, most gun controllers are opposed to it just because it's put on by the NRA.

handle their sexual experiences wisely and well, but we should also make sure they understand about safe sex and have access to contraception, just in case they don't remain abstinent for as long as we hope they will.

Or about finding prescription pills. Or caustic chemicals. Or power tools.

Creating demand for and fascination with handguns under the guise of 'gun safety training' for young schoolchildren. How reprehensible. Reminds me of the candy cigarettes that turned red at the end--practice for future public health atrocities. 'Eddie Eagle' indeed.

I'm also gonna guess you have no idea what the Eddie Eagle program teaches.

Just a fast & dirty "Gunz R Bad" knee jerk reaction based on ...?

The safety courses entail much more than watching Eddie Eagle videos. I realize gun controllers are comfortable with putting people's lives at risk...see the safety record associated with "gun free zones" for another foolish example.

Oh, the outrage!!!

Our "moral and intellectual betters" can easily read between the lines and see the promotion of AR15s, guns for children, suppressors for hunting, et. al., inherent in those few lines.

Just like the fundies on sex ed, just say no, ignore it and it will all go away.

My favorite comment was one that compared the Eddie Eagle figure to Joe Camel. Yeah, that analogy works, one discouraging any contact with an item, the other promoting it vigorously. That's the same thing.

Besides, if the kids actually learned more about gun safety, they couldn't wave that bloody shirt for every gun related accident as often.

All you saw was a program put on by the NRA and immediately assumed that it was about teaching children how to handle firearms safely?

How absurd is that? Make a comment when you didn't even look to see what it's all about.

Creating demand for and fascination with matches under the guise of 'fire safety' for young schoolchildren. How reprehensible. 'Stop Drop and Roll' indeed.

Creating demand for and fascination with pedophiles under the guise of 'child safety' for young schoolchildren. 'Stranger Danger' indeed.

If Bush the Stupid had come out with a voting rights measure that strengthened minority voting, I'd support it with the caveat that he's still the stupid one and belongs in international court. I would not throw minority voters into the scrap heap for ideological purity.

Don't spite your face by cutting off your nose.
