Bill Would Limit Backyard Shooting

A Senate committee Thursday unanimously approved a proposal aimed at preventing people from shooting guns at backyard ranges in residential areas.

The vote by the Senate Fiscal Policy Committee readied the bill (SB 130) to go to the Senate floor during the 2016 session, which starts in January.

The bill, sponsored by Sen. Garrett Richter, R-Naples, would make it a first-degree misdemeanor for people to intentionally shoot guns in outdoor areas that are “primarily residential in nature” and include one or more residences per acre.

Ponce Inlet Police Chief Frank Fabrizio, who represented the Florida Police Chiefs Association at the committee meeting, said the bill addresses situations such as people using wooden palettes and dirt to fashion backyard gun ranges.

1. I have no problem with this.

People should be allowed to have shooting ranges, but they need more than 1 acre. I have 1.2 acres and there is no way I would be shooting .22s or any gun.

Somebody with 5-10 acres and a good backstop should be allowed to have a home range.

2. A good law, most towns already have laws regulating this.

Not only is it unsafe, environmentally unfriendly as well in that you leave a pile of lead in the backyard. Better idea to join a local club where the lead can be managed and recycled.

3. Florida is one of many states that the NRA has been successful in passing

'State Preemption' laws that prohibit any county or municipal entity from passing laws restricting guns. Only guns, nothing else. 'Cause gunz is soooooooo special.

however, to be elected in Florida, especially to the state level, you have to be stupid and the stupidity is bi partisan. There are a few exceptions like Reubin Askew.
failing that feature was an "out of sight out of mind" or "solution in search of a problem". The latter is especially true for everyone outside someone who those committing a connected crime, like trying to hit someone. They forgot the rare breed of stupid asshole who pisses off neighbors.
This stupid asshole, with two ranges within ten blocks and even on mass transit routes from his house, decided plywood and some branches was adequate backstop in a back yard the size of a postage stamp.

11. State premption laws were generally not passed in a vaccum.

Anti-gun bullies generally make preemption laws necessary.
