White resentment is fueling opposition to gun control, researchers say

The article firmly says that the racial bias is a subset of gun control opponents and is not applicable to ALL gun control opponents.

In their paper, published in the journal Political Behavior in November, Alexandra Filindra and Noah J. Kaplan found that whites were significantly less likely to support gun control measures when they had recently looked at pictures of black people, than when they had looked at pictures of white people. The study, which surveyed 1,000 white respondents, also found that the higher they scored on a common measure of racial prejudice, the stronger negative effect the photos of black people had on the respondents' support for gun control.
====
To explain this, Filindra and Kaplan draw on a rich body of sociological literature about the language of racial resentment, especially among whites. Racial resentment, as Filindra and Kaplan define it, is a prejudice based in the belief that blacks don't value independence and hard work and instead push for special rights conferred by the government. It upholds whites as morally superior while ignoring the structural advantages of whiteness.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2016/04/04/white-resentment-is-fueling-opposition-to-gun-control-researchers-say/

From the abstract:

Our study investigates how and why racial prejudice can fuel white opposition to gun restrictions. Drawing on research across disciplines, we suggest that the language of individual freedom used by the gun rights movement utilizes the same racially meaningful tropes as the rhetoric of the white resistance to black civil rights that developed after WWII and into the 1970s. This indicates that the gun rights narrative is color-coded and evocative of racial resentment. To determine whether racial prejudice depresses white support for gun control, we designed a priming experiment which exposed respondents to pictures of blacks and whites drawn from the IAT. Results show that exposure to the prime suppressed support for gun control compared to the control, conditional upon a respondent’s level of racial resentment. Analyses of ANES data (2004–2013) reaffirm these findings. Racial resentment is a statistically significant and substantively important predictor of white opposition to gun control.

This is not a stand alone, one of a kind study. Rather it is a part of a larger body that goes back many decades.

Some white people believe everything, literally everything, the government does is motivated by the desire to take away their freedoms and give them to black people. Suspicion of one thing often enables suspicion of all things. These people would be very surprised to learn that many early attempts at gun control laws were aimed at disarming black people and poor people.

Right, whatever...

We are pretty damn well armed here in NDN Country, we learned that painful lesson long ago. We'll stay well armed, if that's ok with you.

If it isn't ok with you, piss off, you have no say in NDN Country.

... Seems to be what they are saying....

To me it seems more like a way to not need to argue about the merits, or lack their off in regards to gun control..

No need to debate with racists, eh?? No need to defend your position against one either.

Keep it up, this is why we win..

Own a gun? Yep, you are a racist and most likely a misogynist as well. You may recall a certain now-deceased (in the digital sense) denizen of this group from the blustery north who said precisely that. Hence the blather coming from the control movement claiming the primary purpose of the 2A was to arm fugitive slave hunting patrols and to suppress slave rebellions. Of course, this begs the question of how African American (and women) gun owners are judged. The answer I've seen, which I will leave to your imagination, is unpleasant in the extreme.

Rather like the stirrings of an anti free expression movement as well. Making claims that the desire for freedom of expression is fundamentally racist. Something about how whites want free reign to use racial epithets and the like as a means to enforce the subjugation of minorities.

They are essentially alike, water carriers of the oligarchy and too stupid to realize it.

Zimmermann broke no current laws, acted reasonably and Florida laws relating to any of his actions need no changes

No doubt you'll get plenty of support here in this group, for reasons related to the topic of the OP.

Meanwhile, calling Zimmerman a murderer in this group is likely to get one's post hidden.

We are supposed to call the murder "self-defense" in order to satisfy the sensibilities of the Zimmerman supporters here.

Takes a lot of dedication and hard work to be the punch line and suspended on two boards as often as some folks do.

Pretty sure he's already had 4 hides over similar Zimmerman comments in the past 60 days.

The highest count of Concealed Carry permits in Chicago are the South and near West sides. Neighborhoods with 80%+ minority residents. (Just an anomaly, I'm sure)

At the same time there are 3 new large shooting ranges just opened or being built in the Southwest Cook County area. One opened just across the west border of Cook County, another opens next month in South Cook County, and a third is under construction just South of Cook County.

Stupid, stupid people, spending millions of $$$ building new buildings, getting expensive and hard to get County permits, and hiring people.

I guess they just aren't as smart as our resident gun control fans that know there are fewer gun owners every year as a matter of faith and all the old white men with all the guns are dying off.

I suppose those hour + waiting times for a lane at the current ranges are Gun Nutz imagination too.

Boy, all those old white men are really getting desperate.

But I've noticed that we keep getting inundated with "surveys" and "studies" showing how wrong we all are, from the grabber side of the "discussion. Not much in the way of actual facts, like sinking gun sales, closed ranges, manufacturers struggling to stay open or such, but lots of "studies" we're asked to accept and swallow whole.
