Manipulative Editing Reflects Poorly On Katie Couric, Gun Documentary

Katie Couric and the creator of a documentary on guns are apologizing — to a point — for switching around footage to make it falsely appear that members of a Virginia gun rights organization could not summon an answer to a key question on background checks.

An audiotaped recording taken by one of the participants shows otherwise — they spoke extemporaneously for several minutes.

In audio posted on the website Ammoland and shared with the Washington Free Beacon, Couric asks a slightly longer version of the question, even saying she knew what their answer would be. She is immediately met with responses.

This manipulation — and that's what it was — would not pass muster at NPR under its principles for fairness in handling interviews.

Pretty chicken shit if you ask me. If they were invested with real integrity they'd be taking Couric and her crew to task. This sort of deception from the media is dangerous to us all, regardless of what side of any issue you are on.

2. I am surprised a major news outlet, NPR, called Kouric's hand on this...

Bad editing, miss-matched soundtracks, and miss-identification has been a Hallmark of MSM to this very day. But sometimes the three-day-old mullet at the bottom of he ice chest gets to be too much, and part of MSM will gag in public.

Is completely unacceptable. She should be fired. It simply feeds the RW distrust of the "mainstream media." I won't ever trust her again.

The excuse tendered for inserting the pause was ridiculous in the extreme -- and Couric said she stood behind her associate who made it.

8. The first thing that crossed my mind when I heard this story........

.........was my lack of surprise that one of the panelists taped the proceedings. He/she knew that Couric was not to be trusted. I would have done the same thing.

12. So what exactly is most dishonest about this?

When I think of an interview, my preconception is that an interviewer or host will dialog with one or more subjects or guests in order to present (in either a positive or negative light) what they think. The proceedings are then either recorded or broadcast live for the public, sometimes both with shows like Real Time. You don't really have a chance to lie, misrepresent and deceive with live broadcasts. Although even in a live broadcast the interviewer and producers can frame the issue by selecting the questions and topics.

If you want to mess with an interview in order to push your agenda there's a few things you can do. You could edit out things the interviewer said that may annoy or offend those being interviewed. You could edit out some responses or those interviewed which don't fit your narrative. Katie's production staff (who she stands behind and defends) did both certainly with her knowledge and probably at her request.
