Katie Couric says sorry for 'misleading' edit in gun rights documentary

• Gun rights advocates say omission of responses made them look ‘stupid’
• News anchor’s Under the Gun film accused of journalistic ‘malpractice’

Katie Couric apologized on Monday after days of criticism about a “misleading” edit in her new documentary that made gun rights advocates “appear to be speechless” when asked a simple question about gun control.

“I take responsibility,” the news anchor wrote in a statement on the website for Under the Gun, a documentary about gun violence in America that she narrated and produced.

Couric had billed the documentary as a balanced look at the gun debate in America, and argued that the film highlighted a “huge silent majority” of gun owners who actually supported the moderate gun control measures that the National Rifle Association rejected.

In a key moment of the film, Couric interviews a group of members of the Virginia Citizens Defense League, a group that views the NRA as “to the left of us” when it comes to gun rights, according to the VCDL president, Philip Van Cleave.

"Gun rights advocates say"?

Its been factually proven, theres no 'say' about it.

What was done was done deliberately, and purposefully. And this 'apology' is a non-apology apology.

3. Eugene, have you read if Kouric will change footage to accurately reflect the question?

Or will she stick with the corrupted version? Giving a paper & ink transcript is one thing, dramatizing with film and sound(less) tract is quite another.

On a holiday, so nobody covered. Is she going to correct the inaccurate editing? Never thought the "liberal media" complaint was accurate, but this may change my mind.

9. In the short term, her faux documentary has done PR damage to the gun controllers...

In the long run though, people will forget what she did. The risk we run is that in 2-3 years from now when someone unfamiliar with the issue decides to watch this on Prime, Netflix, or more realistically YouTube. They won't realize journalistic malpractice occurred. That's a shame. But let's face it, very few people have any interest in watching gun control propaganda pieces. It's just not a popular subject.

In the meantime, this film has given groups like the NRA and their co-conspirators NPR and WaPo an opportunity to expose what we know to be the perpetual lies and dishonesty from big gun control. It's sick, sad, and pathetic.

11. Sort of a pisser that she's not getting called out for editing *her question*.

During the actual interview she looks stupid because her question demonstrates her ignorance regarding gun store purchases. So they had to snip out the 'hypothetical gun store example' portion of her question. Meanwhile, the panel - which responded right away to her foolish question - is dishonestly portrayed as stupid via insertion of a 9-month-pregnant pause.

This is pro-rights GOLD. Links to this story are going to be posted all across the net whenever/wherever debates on "gun control" take place. It'll be a gift that keeps on giving. Her lame apology following her support of the associate who did the actual editing is icing on the cake.

Great job Katie!
