Armed citizen stops mass shooting at SC nightclub

A woman who was shot outside a Lyman nightclub is recovering while authorities have arrested a man they say is responsible for shooting into a crowd early Sunday. Jody Ray Thompson, 32, of 15 Lake Vista Drive, has been charged with four counts of attempted murder, possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime and unlawful carrying of a weapon.

Shots rang out at the Playoffz nightclub at 105 B Little Mountain Road before 3:30 a.m. Sunday, according to an incident report from the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies believe Thompson got into an argument with another man and began firing into a crowd of people outside the club, Lt. Kevin Bobo, a Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office spokesman, said in an email.

Three people were shot. Another man who was shot at returned fire with his own handgun and struck Thompson in the leg, he said. He acted in self-defense and has a concealed weapons permit, so he's not being charged, Bobo said.

Risky shot, though, to hit him in the leg. I wonder if that was where he was aiming or if it just worked out that way.

Civilian legal semi-automatic rifles on the other hand, are designed specifically and substantially different from the actually military weapons that they resemble.

...we will find the most popular knife chosen by those that stab their victims. Should an item be banned because it's popular? Sometimes things are commonly chosen because they're popular.

Popular: prevailing among the people generally; liked or enjoyed by many people; accepted, followed, used, or done by many people.

Had VA Tech shooter been armed with 2 semi-automatic rifles (NOT 'designed for mass casualties' as I'm being told) he would still have been stopped at 32 kills because your implied point is that there is very little difference between shooters armed with handguns and shooters armed with semi-automatic rifles (NOT 'designed for mass casualties) as you thoughtful folks have noted.

Thanks SO much.

Standard pistol, several standard magazines, all in a tote bag. Even had a back-up target pistol -- designed for paper targets and tin cans.
