Armed citizen stops mass shooting at SC nightclub

A woman who was shot outside a Lyman nightclub is recovering while authorities have arrested a man they say is responsible for shooting into a crowd early Sunday. Jody Ray Thompson, 32, of 15 Lake Vista Drive, has been charged with four counts of attempted murder, possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime and unlawful carrying of a weapon.

Shots rang out at the Playoffz nightclub at 105 B Little Mountain Road before 3:30 a.m. Sunday, according to an incident report from the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies believe Thompson got into an argument with another man and began firing into a crowd of people outside the club, Lt. Kevin Bobo, a Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office spokesman, said in an email.

Three people were shot. Another man who was shot at returned fire with his own handgun and struck Thompson in the leg, he said. He acted in self-defense and has a concealed weapons permit, so he's not being charged, Bobo said.

Doesn't count.

2. I'm glad he won't be charged.

Risky shot, though, to hit him in the leg. I wonder if that was where he was aiming or if it just worked out that way.

4. The shooter had a handgun. Could have been an entirely different story if he was using an assault

weapon designed for mass casualties.

Good thing it was just a handgun.

5. Thankfully, weapons 'designed for mass casualties' are tightly controlled.

Civilian legal semi-automatic rifles on the other hand, are designed specifically and substantially different from the actually military weapons that they resemble.

8. Oh...'mass casualties' aren't the result of civilians being armed with semi-automatic rifles.

Appreciate the correction.

10. Are those goalposts lighter now that you removed 'designed' from them? N/T

12. Civilians don't use semi-automatic rifles to commit mass casualties because semi-automatic rifles

are not designed for mass casualties.

Better?

20. And that's why civilians choose semi-automatic rifles NOT designed for mass casualties

to commit mass casualties.

21. If we look around and investigate enough...

...we will find the most popular knife chosen by those that stab their victims. Should an item be banned because it's popular? Sometimes things are commonly chosen because they're popular.

Popular: prevailing among the people generally; liked or enjoyed by many people; accepted, followed, used, or done by many people.

6. An...

...AR-15 isn't any deadlier than a semi auto handgun with detachable magazine in the hands of someone halfway competent in this type of situation.

13. So more people couldabeen killed at VA Tech if ONLY that shooter had been equipped like

Adam Lanza whose weapon was NOT designed to commit mass casualties.

So much better.

14. Adam Lanza didn't need an AR-15 to kill those kids

that is the lesson of VA Tech . If you can kill 32 adults with two pistols then you can do the same with a bunch of kids.

15. And the VA shooter would have stopped at 32 had he a semi-automatic rifle NOT designed to

inflict mass casualties.

See…now I did not know that you understood these shooters so well. Thanks for your insight.

He was stopped . Why can't controllers resist the insults? I have no insight into crazy people. I just don't take pride in being ignorant about guns.

17. Perhaps it is the point you were making that didn't square…ever think of that?

Had VA Tech shooter been armed with 2 semi-automatic rifles (NOT 'designed for mass casualties' as I'm being told) he would still have been stopped at 32 kills because your implied point is that there is very little difference between shooters armed with handguns and shooters armed with semi-automatic rifles (NOT 'designed for mass casualties) as you thoughtful folks have noted.

Thanks SO much.

Same rate of fire with larger, heavier bullets.

23. Had he not been stopped, he probably would have killed more...

Standard pistol, several standard magazines, all in a tote bag. Even had a back-up target pistol -- designed for paper targets and tin cans.
