Wow. Rough night for the RKBA.

Of course everyone hates gun violence and wants to reduce it. There was about an hour of speakers addressing gun violence that morphed into hating guns and access to guns.

As I reflected on the night, I don't think I heard a single speaker say they supported the 2nd Amendment. Maybe someone did, but one usually hears more token gestures.

I wonder if that signifies anything important.

1. I wouldn't expect anyone at the Dem convention

To openly promote the 2d. At the same time, I heard a lot of talk about "common sense" gun control, or in other words background checks and that's about it.

2. Maybe so. I seem to remember more token support for the 2nd Amendment.

I also heard references to AWB in the talks and videos. Hate that.

14. Yes, including the Rev. Barber's

He was on a roll of unifying and uplifting themes, but then had to attack "the proliferation of military-style weapons on our streets" and "the anti-democratic stronghold of the NRA."

Even as a non-member of the NRA, I bristle at the thought of an interest group being branded as "anti-democratic" simply because it is effective at advocating for its interest in protecting a Constitutional right. Leaders of the NRA may be cynical, racist, manipulative, hypocritical, contemptuous of many other essential Constitutional liberties, and worse; that still does not erase the fact that a group advocating for a strong Second Amendment policy is a part of the democratic process.

And attacking "the proliferation of military-style weapons on our streets" is just code cords for "we want to ban lots of guns."

It's a good thing that Republicans suck entirely this year. Democrats can probably get away with sucking on the Second Amendment without alienating too many voters. Still, my votes for Democrats will have to be accompanied by donations to pro-2A organizations: almost certainly not the NRA, but maybe some of the others. Suggestions of who is good on the RKBA without also being racist haters are welcome.

3. There's a lot of momentum that's built up in seeing evil black rifles as "special"

Since many in the media and politics have worked to convince folks of that, it's more difficult to build and fuel a new train than to just hop on one that's already moving. Even if it doesn't go exactly where you want, it will get you closer.

5. Its true and eerily reminiscent of the build up from 1989 - 1994

Now they can even resurrect the cop killer rifles meme.

8. I remember the music from the Duke

"Take the AWB Train" or something like that...

Maybe you're thinking of cop-killer bullets also.

6. The AWB was a big part of losing Congress in the 1990s.

16. The wisdom of strength in numbers...

...is that unity must always be balanced by tolerance. I find often that it is tolerance that enhances unity.

Your point of view is always welcome.

9. There is no more stepping around the issue. Gun Control is a big part of the platform

now.

UBC, AWB, reverse PLCAA, Terrorist Watch List restrictions, increase restricted peoples, "dealer" crackdown, etc.

Soon to be President Clinton seems to no longer recognize an individual right, when asked. So she is not backing down any longer.

No one mentions the steps cities can and have been taking to effectively reduce gun violence by 50-60%, so focus seems to be only at the federal level via control and .

10. Eltes talking to elites about culture war. I think the DNC has given up on...

...down-ballot candidates, and written off whole legislatures. The speeches are meant to reassure older Demo elites that they are still in the fight over something, somewhere, and for some reason think it will help the presidential race.

There is a lotta big money behind gun-control, and the Party has for some 40 years signalled its willingness to talk seriously about the demands of the extremely wealthy, so no surprse there. But there is a strange symbolic game in which Party leadership is running down the hall way, banging on doors and fervently whispering "gun-control! gun-control!", not knowing that most of the rooms are empty. Personally, I believe the issue is thought to resonate most with women, esp. black women. In the long run, however, this will not ring true -- too many women are arming up, for hunting and SD, thus growing a newer, younger constituency. But older elites still cling bitterly to GunControl, Inc.

Black women like Shaneen Allen, maybe?

There is a new breed of folks out there. They don't shift into fear gear just because they're told to. They can think for themselves. More and more some folks who you don't see much of in this group stop by and add their two cents.

Controlling the actions of those with guns depends most on the ones with the guns. Controlling the law abiding is unnecessary. Controlling the criminals is like trying to nail jello to the wall.

12. Simply the continued purging of the party...

The big tent keeps getting smaller and smaller.

And I don't like it at all.

I am losing hope in our party, between this, watching the convention, talking to some friends who are at the convention, and the way the DNC has acted and a few other issues.

I am becoming very disillusioned.
