Toddler dies after shooting himself in head with shotgun at Fort Worth home

FORT WORTH, Texas – Detectives in Fort Worth are investigating the death of a 3-year-old boy who was found with a gunshot wound to the head.

The Tarrant County medical examiner’s office identified the boy as Jonnie Colon, who died Wednesday night at a home northeast of downtown.

Police say the boy was found in a bedroom and family members told investigators that he discovered a shotgun and accidentally shot himself.

- Even banning single-shot guns wouldn't have stopped this, but I still support allowing single-shot guns, with real registration requirements, similar to registering a car.
- Even if some gun owners are diligent, you will still have guns like this making it into the hands of those who shouldn't have them.
- Another kid killed with a gun. Sad for America.

---------

And there was no picture available of this child who was killed with a gun, so here is a picture of a toddler killed with a gun at Sandy Hook. Her name was Grace McDonnell.

Why do people have easily accessible guns in their homes when children are there????????????????

Troubling.

Google tells me a 3 yro will have an approximate arm length of 13 inches. The minimum legal length of a shotgun barrel is 18 inches.

I would like to know how a toddler finds a loaded shotgun, places it against his head, reaches to full extension, possibly even using something to extend his reach, and activates the trigger.

floating firing pins? I have seen M-16s fire when dropped, maybe this could have and land on something at the right angle.
Or
maybe the family needs to have longer chats with the cops one on one.

Even if the shotgun had a floating firing pin, the shotgun would almost certainly have to land muzzle first (or near muzzle first) first for the firing pin to even have a slight change of setting off a shotgun round.

Like Sarisataka, I have serious doubts that a 3 year could pull the trigger on a shotgun while at the same time aiming it at her head.

but I find such an accident even less plausible unless it was determined there was a defect in that particular gun

And the police seem to agree with many of us that a toddler shooting themselves sounds like bullshit.

"Homicide detectives were also called to the scene. Investigators are working to determine whether the death was accidental or deliberate."
