Should teachers in general be armed?

Should there be a campaign to train and arm many, most or all teachers in schools?

7. Yes and no to guns in schools

I don't think we should turn teachers into armed guards but at the same time I think we need to repeal the gun free zone status of schools so they are treated just like any other place with respect to legalized concealed carry.

There are some 98k public and 34k private schools in this country; that's 56 million students and a few millions of teachers, right?

Okay, so what are the odds of something bad happening due to teachers carrying guns? Remember, even low-probability occurrences will crop up when you have 3 million teachers carrying 180 days a year.

Versus the odds that a teacher will be in the position to stop an attacker the one or two times a year it happens?

Well, okay, it's been getting bad lately, but even allowing for, say, 20 significant instances a year, that versus dropped guns, forgotton guns, stolen guns, etc. from teachers?

11. I'm not a fan of

"losing our shit" over rare events. Arming teachers is a mitigation strategy, not a solution. In places where solutions are not likely to happen anytime soon (like Pakistan and Isreal), here it is disaffected young men. Our solutions are easier.

Here is a question, should states etc. simply remove prohibitions on teachers and staff from carrying theirs?

12. Please read my entire post before jumping on me...

I personally feel that there should be an option for allowing teachers who have demonstrated they are fully trained and have been shown to be of sound mind, and are willing to maintain their certification, to be able to carry weapons at school. However, this would be strictly on a voluntary basis, and the teachers would NOT be identified.

The reason I advocate for this is because I believe that removing the certainty that all classrooms are gun-free zones would help to deter future active shooters from using schools as their hunting grounds. Right now, even on campuses that have a police presence, all a shooter has to do is to start their heinous acts on the other side of school and they know that they have at least a small window of time before the LEO can get to them.

I know that arming teachers is not the best answer, but until we get at the root cause that leads to creating these sick individuals, we are stuck with less than optimum options.

What I disagree with is requiring folks with no demonstrated talent for or interest in carrying a gun to do so. I fully support qualified and experienced CC licensed staff carrying at school, if they wish. There should be a state sponsored law enforcement approved training course and exam featuring tactical scenarios and a 3 year re-training requirement.

I don't support a general arming of some or all teachers.
