Texas Tech police: campus carry a good thing

LUBBOCK, Texas - Campus carry has been law in Texas for two years now, and Texas Tech police say the law makes the university a safer place.

They say the policy even deters potential active shooters from attempting a mass shooting situation.

“I believe it makes the campus a safer place, to live, learn and educate,” said Amy Ivey, a lieutenant at the Texas Tech Police Department.

Tech police say in a potential active shooter situation, someone might be able to stop it if they are armed.

3. given that CCW holders

are statistically more law abiding and often better trained (especially Texas' training requirement) than cops. Also, all of the holders are 21+ by law. Most of them are older students that have better things to do than binge drink with 18-19 year olds. The probability of "until it isn't" happening is nil. But then, the odds of getting shot at school (most school homicides are stabbings and beatings) is 1 in 614 million. For reference, the odds of winning Powerball is 1 in 279 million.

Public policy should be based only on facts and reason, I have yet to see a valid argument against it.

I’m referring to the possibility of another shooting. Maybe a potential shooter would choose another target be sure of concealed carriers, but it seems that school shooters are directing their hostility to students st particular schools. Then, in the event of a shooting, the issue is whether and to what extent gun carriers will change the outcome.

there are an infinite number of possibilities and outcomes. Some cases directly, some cases, maybe not. With Charles Whitman, a couple of students and a prof happened to have their deer rifles in their cars and were able to provide suppressive fire to allow police to safely advance on the tower.

Either way, self defense, and the means to do so, is a fundamental human and natural right. The basic principle of being pro-choice is personal autonomy privacy as protected under the 9A. The same is true with self defense. An attack on one individual right is an attack on all.

In my opinion talking about mass shooting is not particularly relevant for this. There are too few data points to say it is good or bad, that campus carry would deter a shooter.

What I would be more interested in is the statistics on other crimes on campus, particularly assault and weapons-related charges. If those statistics have moved in a negative direction then perhaps campus-carry should be reconsidered. If they have moved in a positive direction it is possible that allowing carry on campus actually is a good thing and does deter crime. If there is essentially no change then all of the angst that is put into the debate may simply be for naught.

If you had to go to college in Lubbock, TX you'd probably do the same.

And yes, I speak with a certain amount of experience on the matter.
