Kellyanne Conway questions the competence of Philadelphia mayor after he seeks federal action on gun control

White House counselor Kellyanne Conway on Thursday questioned the competence of Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney (D) after he made a plea for state and federal action on gun control in the wake of this week’s shooting of six police officers in his city.

“What Philly sorely needs is a competent mayor who sufficiently respects and resources our brave men and women of law enforcement,” Conway wrote on Twitter.

She attached a television clip of Kenney from Wednesday night reacting to a standoff with a gunman in a North Philadelphia neighborhood that dragged on for hours and resulted in no fatalities.

“Our officers need help,” Kenney told reporters in the clip. “They need help. They need help with gun control. They need help with keeping these weapons out of these people’s hands. .?.?. This government, from the federal and state level, don’t want to do anything about getting these guns off the streets and getting them out of the hands of criminals.”

... but I wouldn't be so sure about that "most of the nation" bit. The stats that get thrown around are highly suspect.

I'm still grappling with the idea that I've heard espoused in the mass media lately that the vast majority of the country wants more gun control but can't get it because Congress is in the thrall of the NRA. Huh? The NRA's clout derives from being able to deliver electoral victories to their favorites, both through voter mobilization and through campaign contributions. If the "vast majority" are against them, how do they manage to deliver these victories? A lot of people must be polling one way and voting another.

3. I don't know if incompetence is the right word,

I would call it pandering or grand standing. A convicted felon that is already violating state and federal gun control laws, have been given slaps on on the wrist for past violations, and is in the illicit drug business (how is that war on drugs working out?) who would still have no problem with getting guns.

Kind of like the Toronto mayor who claims that confiscating registered handguns from licensed owners will actually do anything about gang wars or the Pittsburg mayor claiming armed security at Jewish temples was "stupid" without explaining why, ignoring the fact that European temples, who have a longer history of dealing with antisemitic violence, have armed security. Sometimes parishioners with pistols or security with automatic weapons.

If the mayor knew the current gun laws, he would know that they are already enough to bury the shooter under the jail.

If the current laws are not going to be enforced, what good would any more laws do?
