Guns are seeing a fair amount of controversy just now. Judge Roger of San Diego decided his state's AWB is unconstitutional. The folks at ATF have stepped up with some proposed regulations for a few reasons having to do with things like 3D printers and 80% receivers but also because some guns today, for instance ARs and Glocks don't exactly fit the classic regulation definition of a gun.

IMO an assault weapon ban is rather meaningless and waste of political effort. This is a mini14, a ranch rifle:

IMO this isn't an assault weapon nor an assault rifle. It fires the same ammo as an AR-15 at the same speed an AR can fire it.
Functional differences escape me. But then I don't think about modern rifles in the same way the Amish think about cars.

1. "Assault Weapon"

has basically lost all meaning (or never had one to begin with) and just comes down to how someone interprets a firearm, usually from their own emotional state. Its not like a defined definition like what an Assault Rifle is (select fire rifle). During the AWB of 1994 you had it mean two definite elements (semi-auto with detachable magazine) in combination of two other aspects (like compensator, adjustable stock, heat shields ect.). Then you had other states give their own interpretation of including only one of those other aspects or states that says it need to have 3 of those other aspects. Now you have the upcoming ATF nominee saying it only needs to have the original definite elements which if that were the case then 90% of ALL guns would fall under that definition.

4. Just my opinions

"Assault Weapon" - This never had a deterministic meaning. Having a precise vocabulary and terminology ought to be important in all legal matters. Marketing, both favoring gun sales and advocating gun restrictions, have misused the term to point of it having no meaning at all.

"Assault Rifle" - This has originally, back to WWII at least, a well defined meaning which has been widely accepted by governments and industry.

Aside from the futile attempts to manufacture terms, how do you feel about restrictions in general but specifically about long guns?
I'm mostly thinking rifles here but feel free to say something about shotguns.

This isn’t a laughing matter.

You all put so much stock in your “guns, assault weapons or otherwise”, you fail to realize the mind is the most powerful weapon. You don’t need a gun to defend your home from an intruder. It’s your home for god’s sake! Use what you got around you and save your life and the life of the suspect.

What about the kitchen? I practically live in the kitchen. Just the other day I was making a meal and had all sorts of stuff that could be used to disable an attacker without killing them and way more effective than fetishists and their guns. I had the pots and pans around me, the poker to turn the meat, or how about the couple of double tall cans of Bush’s baked beans I had near me? I don’t know about gun nutters but when I chuck shit, it lands square where I’m aiming.

On the other hand, I am (despite my disabilities) perfectly capable of putting multiple rounds into a small target at short range with a Scorpion 9mm braced pistol. But by all means, please explain how a can of beans is a superior self defense tool.
