Oklahoma Senate passes Open Carry bill 34-9, goes to House

http://www.tulsaworld.com/news/article.aspx?subjectid=336&articleid=20120315_16_A1_OKLAHO557850

OKLAHOMA CITY - The Oklahoma Senate on Wednesday passed a measure that would allow for the open carrying of guns.

Senate Bill 1733, by Sen. Anthony Sykes, R-Moore, heads to the House after securing Senate approval by a vote of 34-9.

Sykes said the measure would allow those who have a concealed-carry permit to openly carry a gun or carry concealed.

SNIP

Cities and counties could not pass measures banning open carry if state law allowed it, Sykes said.

--------

After having passed the Senate so overwhelmingly I suspect that passage by the House and signature by the governor would be certain.

I do have a replica of a 1915 Cavalry rig for the 1911. It includes a drop holster w/flap and two magazine pouches.

There's really no way to win. They can't decide whether to mock modern holsters and guns or traditional ones; they're terrified of both.

How sexist.

PS: They're magazines not "clips".

PSS: Revolvers require no magazines.

I suppose it would make it so a cc person wouldn't be in trouble if someone saw his/her gun?

I have a CHL (Texas for CCW) and there are rare special occasions when I would like to be able to open carry. Mainly if I have to use an ATM at night then I would use the walk-up (So I can have better visibility around me) and would like to be able to pull my shirt back from the gun making it visible so that any potential robber would know that I am not an easy mark and leave me alone. After leaving the ATM I would resume concealed carry.

Open carry has not been a problem in any of the states that have it.

before one knows anyone is even around. I am a believer in concealed carry for this very reason. I don't have a problem with open carry, just believe it is better for society for people to keep their gun concealed.

I'd love to read of just ONE example, ever, anywhere, of an open carrier being "shot first" because he was the visible threat.

From my viewpoint, open carry is simply a deterrent. I think concealed carriers hope they can use their "tactical advantage" to surprise a potential criminal and shoot him.

You'll either be arrested or else tied up giving police statements all night after you had to use your weapon because you looked like an inviting target. Meanwhile I'll home in bed, never having encountered the potential criminal in the first place - because he saw my pistol and kept on moving, looking for an easier target (like a concealed carrier).

They want fast, easy money.

It is kind of difficult to get a dead guy to withdraw money from an ATM.

Most of them are terrible shots and are likely to miss unless they are up close.

Else you are simply borrowing a "debate" tactic from the pro-restrictionists.

Constitutional Rights do not require camoflauge or a burkha.

And who said anything about constitutional rights, or violation of rights. And do you always go around implying collaboration with the other side when you are clearly taking to someone who generally agrees with your positions? How about a little decorum?

He thinks this is a civil war or something and that if he doesn't get everything he wants in regards to gun control, he's being held in slavery. Hmm...I wonder what political factions I've heard that one from before. Reasonable people like you and I can come to agreements, unreasonable people see all discussion as conflict with no possible resolution except for some vague concept of "victory" and even then they have to rub other people's noses in it constantly to the point of ad nauseum. Hey PavePusher, it's not a war, it's a political discussion board!

(Note to jurors: it's a fair point, and it's politely stated, and the goal is more civility not less. There is no blanket ban on "call-outs.)

Now each house has an OC bill from the other, and they're so similar that they can't both pass. They'll likely go to conference and get hammered into a single bill to be presented to the governor.

The governor has specifically stated on her website that she will pass an open carry bill:

Furthermore, I believe that gun ownership rights in Oklahoma can and should be expanded. Gov. Brad Henry vetoed an "open carry" law that would have permitted responsible gun owners to carry weapons without concealing them. When I am governor, I will sign that bill into law and send a message that in Oklahoma, we mean business when it comes to the second amendment.

However, when asked about it recently, she vacillated and said she'd have to review the bill before making a decision.

But it will be a huge cartoonish gun like something from Starship Troopers. Do you think Golden Corral will let me in?

Seriously though, this is Oklahoma, not ISRAEL. We don't have terrorists sneaking into towns killing families and shooting rockets, this open carry will backfire (so to speak) as badly as the Stand Your Ground law in Florida when gang bangers start applying for open carry licenses.

most states really, with no problems. SYG has been the law in some places for nearly 100 years. If Sanford PD did their jobs and not full of stupid racists, we would not be having this conversation.

Of course, as soon as a minority finds themselves having to prove their innocence in criminal court after defending themselves from some racist asshole in a duty to retreat state, everything will change. The same people clutching their pearls over SYG, will see how vile and unjust DTR is. When that happens, this paraphrase of Forest Gump best describe it: ideology and hypocrisy goes together like peas and carrots.
