BLACK MOUNTAIN — A woman said she shot her estranged husband to death after he broke into her house and assaulted her daughter, authorities said.

The shooting, at a home on Maney Lane just outside of town, was reported in a 911 call shortly before 3:30 a.m. Monday, said Lt. Randy Sorrells of the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office.

and gets violent about it is the right thing to do, whatever the weapon.

Unfortunately, the courts rarely agree and Ms. Moore is probably facing time in prison for it.

...of both cases. If all you can see in common is that a woman shot her abuser then you probably shouldn't be discussing this topic.

I hope not.

She should not be charged with anything in my opinion.

in an aggressive manner. If that didn't work, she could have grabbed her handy staff or simply used her natural fighting skills.

and that no charges were filed.

Of course, I'm sure some of the pro-criminal crowd will be along to tell us what she did wrong and that the poor abusive husband had his rights violated somehow.

He did have his rights violated. He was killed and justifiably so. Most times, in small ways, we are faced everyday with cost-benefit decisions. This case is an example of a large and unusual cost-benefit decision.

As Thomas Aquinas wrote: "Without doubt one is allowed to resist against the unjust aggressor to one's life, one's goods or one's physical integrity; sometimes, even 'til the aggressor's death... In fact, this act is aimed at preserving one's life or one's goods and to make the aggressor powerless. Thus, it is a good act, which is the right of the victim."
