http://newsok.com/oklahoma-gov.-mary-fallin-says-shell-sign-open-carry-gun-measure/article/3675105NORMAN Gov. Mary Fallin said Saturday she will sign a bill into law that will allow Oklahomans with concealed handgun permits to carry their weapons in the open.

Oklahoma will become the 26th state to allow open carrying of handguns, she said.
We believe it's a responsible piece of legislation that allows licensed gun owners to be able to open carry if they choose, Fallin, a Republican elected governor in 2010, said afterward. If they choose not to, they don't have to. It also has sufficient protections in it that will allow businesses, certainly government institutions, and those who don't want guns on their facilities to have those protections, too.
Fallin said she will sign Senate Bill 1733 this week; the measure won final legislative approval last week in the Senate. The Senate voted 33-10 to pass it and the House of Representatives passed it 85-3 earlier this month.

Notice the vote totals. At 33-10 and 85-3 means many Democrats voted for the bill too. More Frontlash! Yeah!

We'll wait....

(10,136 posts)However, it is a little odd to require a CCW license to open carry.

(883 posts)it was changed to permit-free OC, but that was pretty much a poison pill designed to sink the bill. We're just thrilled to have gotten what we have. The next step will be constitutional carry, but we're expecting a long, uphill fight for that as well. It's pretty pathetic to have to struggle for decades to restore such basic freedoms.

(768 posts)in the tale of the scorpion and the turtle:
A scorpion, being a very poor swimmer, asked a turtle to carry him on his back across a river. "Are you Scorpion mad?" exclaimed the turtle. "You'll sting me while I'm swimming and I'll drown."
"My dear turtle," laughed the scorpion, "if I were to sting you, you would drown and I would go down with you. Now where is the logic in that?"
"You're right!" cried the turtle. "Hop on!" The scorpion climbed aboard and halfway across the river gave the turtle a mighty sting. As they both sank to the bottom, the turtle resignedly said:
"Do you mind if I ask you something? You said there'd be no logic in your stinging me. Why did you do it?"
"It has nothing to do with logic," the drowning scorpion sadly replied. "It's just my character."

(883 posts)Would have been nice if Brad Henry would have signed it when it got to his desk two or three years ago. It looks like we're finally going to join the rest of the country in the 21st century.

(1,089 posts)having never carried either way, but I like legal open carry for one main reason -- it ensures that somebody carrying a gun with no criminal intent is not breaking the law when he inadvertently displays part of it, or when he is adjusting his clothes. If it would be legal to just wear it openly, there's no question of whether it's legal to accidentally display the butt of his gun when he's reaching up over his head at the grocery store.

Rick Scott Approves Bill to "Briefly" Flash Your Gun at People
By Matthew Hendley Mon., Jun. 20 2011 at 11:20 AM
Florida doesn't have an open-carry law to show your piece off in public, but it's now OK to "briefly and openly" flash your firearm to the populace.
Since Gov. Rick Scott signed SB 234 into law Friday, it's been legal to show off your hardware -- but just for a little bit.
Here's the addition to Florida Statutes that bans openly carrying your weaponry:
It is not a violation of this section for a person licensed to carry a concealed firearm as provided in s. 790.06(1), and who is lawfully carrying a firearm in a concealed manner, to briefly and openly display the firearm to the ordinary sight of another person, unless the firearm is intentionally displayed in an angry or threatening manner, not in necessary self-defense.

While I usually carry a snub nosed .38 in a pocket holster in my pants, I occasionally carry a revolver in an inside the waist band holster under a jacket in the Florida winter. I have had a gust of wind blow my jacket back and prior to the passage of this law, I might have had problems with the authorities if someone in the parking lot would have noticed.

(883 posts)The law goes into effect November 1st. Lots of work to do between now and then, educating citizens and, especially, cops.
