Apple Valley Man Pleads Guilty to Accidentally Shooting, Killing Friend
Derrick Wallace Dahl pleaded guilty this week after saying in December that there was not enough probable cause against him.
By Betsy Sundquist and Allison Wickler
The Apple Valley man charged with manslaughter after shooting his friend in the head with a gun he thought was unloaded pleaded guilty in Dakota County Court this week. Derrick Wallace Dahl, 22, pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter on Wednesday in the shooting death of Benjamin Allen Hanson, 22, of Welch, MN. Dahl's sentencing is scheduled for July. Dakota County Attorney James Backstrom told the Pioneer Press that Dahl's sentence would be 90 days in jail, 10 years' probation and a stayed prison sentence of four years—less than guidelines stipulate. According to the criminal complaint, Burnsville police were called to a home on East Crystal Lake Road on July 23, 2011, on a report of an accidental shooting. Sister: Williston shooting was accidental
Posted: Thursday, May 24, 2012 12:00 am
WILLISTON (AP) — The sister of a Williston man accused of killing his wife over the weekend said the shooting was accidental. Josh House, 28, is charged with felony manslaughter and reckless endangerment in the Saturday shooting death of Chantel House, 24. He posted bond Monday and was released from jail. He is due in court June 12. Josh House’s sister, Suzie House, said that the shooting was a “terrible accident” that happened when her brother was cleaning a gun and it accidentally fired. The bullet hit Chantel House and she was pronounced dead at a hospital. The couple moved from Oregon with their 2- and 6-year-old sons earlier this year for employment. They had been married for nearly seven years and were avid shooting hobbyists, Suzie House said ... http://bismarcktribune.com/news/state-and-regional/sister-williston-shooting-was-accidental/article_99cd61e2-a55d-11e1-92be-0019bb2963f4.html

Judge: Ohio teen to be tried as adult in school shooting that killed 3 students, hurt others
By Associated Press, Published: May 24
CHARDON, Ohio — A 17-year-old will be tried as an adult in the school shooting deaths of three students, a juvenile court judge ruled Thursday after hearing a sheriff’s deputy describe how the teen wore a T-shirt with the word “Killer” and admitted shooting people. T.J. Lane admitted firing at students sitting at a cafeteria table at Chardon High School east of Cleveland on Feb. 27, killing three and seriously wounding two, authorities say. Lane, with his grandparents and the relatives of victims sitting apart in court, swallowed hard and blinked as Geauga County Juvenile Court Judge Timothy Grendell announced that he should be tried as an adult. Lane could face life in prison if he’s convicted. Minors are not eligible for the death penalty in Ohio. Had his case been routed to juvenile court, the maximum possible penalty would have kept him jailed until he turned 21 ... http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/17-year-old-could-face-trial-in-adult-court-in-ohio-school-shootings-that-killed-3-students/2012/05/24/gJQA6s3gmU_story.html

If you haven't been around DU long, you should probably know that the opinions posted in the gungeon are very different from those of average progressives or DU members. The powers that be keep the guns discussion here in order to prevent the right-wing NRA talking points from polluting GD.

So the pro-gunners, who are often single-issue extremists, congregate in here. Of course, there are also some pro-gun-control progressives that post here regularly, but the NRA crowd is in the majority.

I'm not joking about the cow pasture. One hundred feet past my house the street ends and a cow pasture starts. At the other end, one mile away from me is the Waste Disposal Landfill. Either way your ending won't be fun for you.

The bumps one the street, that aren't noticable at 30 mph, would become jump ramps at high speed.

Face it. Your side is losing. So far this year there have been 27+ NRA backed laws passed and signed, versus none for your side.

This is the fourth or fifth version of a poster that does a google search and then a "cut and paste" with no comment on any news item about a crime with a gun. It requires you to conflate law abiding gun owners with criminals and is supposed to inspire a sense of shame for owning a gun or defending the 2nd amendment.

It never works and after a week or two they get tired of it and go away when it doesn't get the desired results. Usually someone starts posting "gun used to save a life" stories.

...but a legal update in the case of an intentional shooting from February.

The best remedy for the actual accidents, short of removal of all firearms from citizen hands through the intercession of specially trained unicorns, is safety training. The organization that does more of that than any other group in the world is the bad old NRA. I'm a member. I hate their politics, but I love their training programs. I'm an instructor, as a matter of fact, and I'll be giving two Home Firearms Safety courses next month.

Let's keep those numbers going down. Y'all could support the NRA with a donation if you wish -- they're making much more of a positive contribution toward the reduction of firearms accidents than Brady, VPC, et al. Just make sure you're not donating to the NRA-ILA -- them's the political folks.
