On December 14 I will have been clean/sober for 30 years

According to another poster I should be disqualified from owning a firearm because 3 decades ago I had a problem with alcohol/ drugs.

Am I the only one that this makes no sense to?

is that any grifter that comes along can stake out an absurd position and flog it for a buck. It significantly increases the number of witless lemmings ready to throw in a few cents with little capital investment.

Good work building a life.

When I got back in-country I was an addict... I know 1st hand once a addict always an addict. I got lucky and with some help of a good woman and the V.A I got clean.(No arrest record of my past indiscretions.)However most states have recognized that some people do come out the other side of addictions a better person . So if it's a felony that prohibits you from voting, or owning a weapon, that can be changed (at least in most states) so grab a lawyer and file the papers... Again congrats on 30 years of staying clean. That is a great thing, Pay it forward and help others in the same positions we were in.

I’m not sure what you are saying here. I don’t have a criminal record (my job requires a back ground check every year) and I’m not a prohibited person. In Colorado I can’t have a CHP if I’ve had an alcohol related arrest with in 5 years (again not an issue) and the question on the 4473 is
Are you an unlawful user of (no) or addicted to, marijuana, or any depressant, stimulant or narcotic drug or any other controlled substance?
And I think I can answer “No” truthfully
So, no lawyer needed

I was drunk when I met my Loving Wife.

I was drunk when I married my Loving Wife

I figured that I had better quit drinking before something REALLY bad happened to me.

In February it will be 28 years together

Still sober

or people that would be eligible to be LEO i.e. the straightest of the straight. It doesn't take a genius to ascertain their reasons. It isn't public safety.

It takes courage to talk about it. You dealt with your situation first hand unlike persons who assign blame, make excuses and otherwise point fingers.

With all due respect it really doesn't, it takes wanting to stay sober more than you want to drink.

Several years ago I read "Baa Baa Black Sheep" By LTC (ret) Gregory Boyington.
The one paragraph that stood out in the whole book was where Boyington (also a recovering alcoholic) said that the definition of willpower was simply doing whatever it is you most want to do at any given time.
