The Latest: WHCA Says Trump Shouldn't Travel Without Media

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON — Nov 16, 2016, 9:19 AM ET

The Latest on Donald Trump's transition to the presidency. (All times EST):

9:15 a.m.

The White House Correspondents' Association says it is "unacceptable" that President-elect Donald Trump is traveling without a regular pool of journalists to inform the public of his whereabouts.

Trump left his residence Tuesday night for a family dinner after his transition team had told journalists he would not be in public the rest of the day. A protective pool of journalists is supposed to join the president or president-elect's motorcade to record their whereabouts and be on hand in the event of breaking news.

Trump spokeswoman Hope Hicks has said the team plans to respect the traditions of press access at the White House. WHCA President Jeff Mason says "the time to act on that promise is now."

Mason says it is critical that journalists covering the president-elect "be allowed to do their job."

Trump Breaks Protocol Again on Press Access

By JULIE PACE AND KEN THOMAS, ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK — Nov 16, 2016, 6:59 AM ET

President-elect Donald Trump emerged from his New York skyscraper Tuesday night for the first time in days, moving about the nation's largest city without a pool of journalists on hand to ensure the public has knowledge of his whereabouts.

The president-elect spent about two hours dining with family at the 21 Club, a restaurant a few blocks from his Trump Tower residence. Journalists were only aware that Trump was leaving home when they spotted a large motorcade pulling away from the building, including an ambulance with lights flashing.

The movement was a surprise given that Trump's campaign had already called a "lid" — a signal to journalists that he would not be venturing out for the rest of the day. The practice is meant to ensure that journalists are on hand to witness, on behalf of the public, the activities of the president or president-elect, rather than relying on secondhand accounts.

Trump spokeswoman Hope Hicks issued the lid at 6:14 p.m. But just over an hour later, Trump's motorcade left his residence. His whereabouts became clear only after a fellow diner tweeted a picture of the president-elect arriving at the restaurant.

Between now and his inauguration, I think he has a Little right to peace and privacy. I don't recall if past elections followed this rule or not but the press is certainly making an ass of itself.

Pretty funny stuff.
