The garrison commander of Fort Bragg told the audience at the Fayetteville Regional Chamber's State of the Community luncheon Wednesday that he doesn't anticipate "a huge loss" of troops as the Army braces for cutbacks in defense spending.

The defense budget for 2015 trims spending and aims for a smaller, more modern Army rather than a larger one less prepared for combat.

Some members of Congress see that approach as weakening the nation's capabilities in a period of growing uncertainty in hot spots across the globe.

Once Army leaders initially decided to reduce their collective troops from 560,000 to 490,000, the worst-case scenario for cutbacks on Fort Bragg appeared to be a loss of about 14,000 soldiers.
