The state has received a $4.3 million grant to help small and medium-size military contractors prepare for anticipated cuts in Defense Department spending.
Washington received the two-year grant from the Pentagons Office of Economic Adjustment, which is set up to help military communities cope with sudden changes in Defense Department trends.

The money follows several banner years for the states military contractors. Defense Department spending more than doubled between 2008 and 2011 as the Pentagon increased work on two multibillion dollar Boeing contracts, one for the Navys P-8A Poseidon surveillance jet and the other for the next generation of Air Force refueling tankers.
Last year, state contractors pulled in $7.6 billion in work for the Defense Department, up from $3.6 billion in 2008, according to the federal spending database called usaspending.gov.
