Info Beyond DD-214 for Vietnam Era Vet

I'm the son of a deceased Vietnam vet. I have his DD-214. He was inducted 7 NOV 68 and discharged 21 MAY 69. ARMY AUS UNASGD

Is there any other parts of his service record that I could get? I'd just like to know more about his military service. Where he was stationed? What unit(s) he was assigned to (I understand the above states he was unassigned at time of discharge)? Etc.. I don't know the right questions to ask.

I'm pretty sure that's where I went several years ago and obtained his DD-214. I'll look and see where/how I can request his 201 file, etc.

2. Do you have his 201 file?

That will often have records that don't show up on his DD-214.

For example, my DD-214 shows that I qualified as a Marksman on the M-16A2 rifle. That's the lowest of the riflery classifications. I originally qualified as Marksman in Basic Training, but improved to the level of Expert, the highest in riflery, by the time I ETS'd. My 201 file has the range card proving I was a rifle expert. It's the Expert badge that I display on my Class A uniform.

First time I've ever heard of it. I'm just clueless.

Is that something, as next of kin (eldest son, only child) that I could obtain.

4. I'm not sure.

It's a file that contains a complete record of time in service, from orders to various posts, to awards, reprimands, copies of official correspondence, etc. They used to present it to the service member upon discharge when I was in. I don't know how it worked during the Vietnam Era or today.

7. County Veterans Service Officers

Every county has a County Veterans Service Officer who can guide you on getting information. They are very knowledgeable and you can sit down with them face to face. As a child of a veteran you may be entitled to some benefits, especially if you have health issues related to your father's agent orange exposure.

The County Veterans Service office is very close to my office and I walk by there frequently. I'll take in his DD-214 and see if they can help me.

10. Much can be deduced from dd214 boxes 5a, 12, 13a, and 15.

He would have only been in long enough for one assignment after training.

11. If you have a "Federal Building" nearby.

You can walk up to the veterans floor and request records on the spot. Be prepared for a wait though.

I had a campaign ribbon that was not on m DD-214, and did an in person request, filling out the form on the spot. It took almost 3 years to receive my medal (Naval Expeditionary), and an updated cop of my DD-214.
