Horseman rides across US to bring attention to Agent Orange

SANTA CLARITA, California (AP) — The two things Colt Romberger and his father had most in common, the ones that made them best friends as well as father and son, were a deep affection for horses and an equally deep pride in having served their country in times of war.

So when Cliff Romberger, a Vietnam War veteran and onetime wrangler of horses on Hollywood film sets, died in 2015 of a brain disease doctors attributed to his exposure to the chemical defoliant Agent Orange, his son knew there was but one way to honor him: He would saddle up his horse and ride it from the Pacific Ocean to the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington.

On Monday the compact, muscular 32-year-old Iraq war veteran will begin that journey through big-city streets, across desert sand and over mountain ranges and prairies, aboard a handsome gray-and-black 4-year-old quarter horse named Gus.

Along the way he hopes to accomplish several things: raise money for veterans causes through a nonprofit foundation he's established, tell the public about the devastating, deadly effect the use of Agent Orange is having on thousands of aging bodies of Vietnam veterans and, with stops at town halls across the country, let those veterans know they have not been forgotten.

"I've spoken to so many Vietnam vets, and they've emailed me. Sometimes it breaks my heart hearing their stories," he says in a voice momentarily choked with emotion.

There was the guy in Norfolk, Virginia, who heard of the ride and sent him $200. When Romberger called to thank him he learned the man was dying of a form of leukemia he believed had been caused by Agent Orange but that had not yet been classified as such because there hadn't been enough cases for the Department of Veterans Affairs to study. He was hoping the government could make that connection in time to add his wife to his survivor's benefits.

comes through Phoenix..will research his route...hopefully be able to hand him support...

This is unbelievable - you are not going to believe this - MY HUSBAND (we met after his ride 5/83), in 1982-83 rode for a reason..his Mom died of a massive heartache at the age of 48...started in Ashland Mass. ended down Hollywood Blvd..10 months eight days - he kept a journal - one horse, one man, and the help of the good people across this country..anyone, anyone who knows this story was a part of it..

Hubby's route - RT 20 thru Mass.thru NY, Rip Van Winkle bridge -I should go get the book gathering dust in the closet - for the exact - but you can visualize his RT thru NY towards PA - into VA - RT11 - held up in Winchester for 6 weeks...so many stories...good people - Amish replaced shoes on horse...pastures, food, shelter - all along the way...Texarkana to Van Horn TX - wind storms etc etc etc...west on RT10 thru Phoenix..to LA,,average 20-24 miles a day.....

Cliff, riding for a noble cause, will need your help - that will be up to you (I have just heard of this thru this article) - find his route....be there....(I wonder if he will have people with him?)- my hubby only had the good people of this country....along the way....oh, the newspapers and local TV reporters met hubby along the way..we have all the articles..hubby is now 63 yrs old...

Cliff Leaves tomorrow from CA...need to follow and we will be there.....(I am going to call the AZ Republic Newspaper, so they are sure to be aware and report)

those of us who have been dealing with the effects of agent orange, and the government's dishonest refusal to acknowledge the extent of the horror, salute him.

And tried to sign up to follow. Came up as unsupported, and wouldn't let me do it.

Can someone please keep us updated, like if he's going thru KY? I'd be glad to meet him with some hay and grain.
