and then say: "It's classified. I can't talk about it" when you press them for details.

Anyone who has seen the kinds of things that remain classified is not likely to be bragging about it in the first place.

Chris Kyle was an exception, but he was clearly a psychopath.

Perhaps it's just semantics. Perhaps he is making thing up from something he saw in a movie.

When I googled 'Op Con' it brought up a military chaplain web site. So, again, hmmmmm........

I always get suspicious vibe when someone starts bragging about their activities still being 'classified'. If they are, maybe they should not bring it up, at all.

I mean, ok, maybe he meant regiment, because the 18th is an active mechanized regiment. The 18th infantry division disbanded after WWI. But given the "I was a Delta Sniper..." I'm calling BS.

There is an 18th Infantry Regiment. The 18th Infantry Regiment currently exists with one active battalion under the U.S. Army Regimental System and has no regimental headquarters, home duty station is Ft Riley Kansas.

I served from 1977 - 1991, 101st Airborne Ft Campbell Kentucky, 11th Signal Bde Ft Huachuca Arizona, MFO Sinai Egypt, 4th Infantry Ft Carson Colorado, 25th Infantry Schofield Barracks Hawaii.

OPCON, operational control, a joint doctrinal term in the United States Army.

OP CON is short for Operational Control. As opposed to AD CON which is Administrative control or TA CON for tactical control.

Units assigned to Joint Operations are under Operational Control of the Host Command (If a regional command) or Commander of the Joint Task Force (if one has been established) while administratively controlled by the higher HQ of the unit.

For example, let's say a Contingency Response Element is tasked to open an airfield in CENTCOM. It will still be administratively supported by it's chain of command at home station but will follow the orders of the CENTCOM Commander in theater.

But, the theater is large the Commander has bigger issues to keep them busy, so a lower level commander can assume Tactical Control to give day to day guidance/direction.

All this is a long preface for me to say - INDIVIDUALS ARE NOT OP CONNED - UNITS ARE

He would have been TDY (USAF, USA) or TAD (USN USMC) or would have deployed supporting unit XYZ during operation ABC

OPCON is a derivative (Of COCOM) authority that, in a simple form, refers to a commander's authority to reorganize forces based on mission requirements. It is very common for SF operators (And others) to be "Opconned" out in support roles. The 18th Infantry has been around a long time. Based on the writing in your OP, I'm thinking you might have paraphrased the "Division" part.

Whether he was or wasn't actually in, who knows? Some guys brag a little, some don't. Maybe he was full of it, maybe he wasn't, but you had a chance there to support a potential Brother who might have needed it.
