Mike a WW 2 veteran

I’m remembering Du vets. men I knew over the years this morning. Anyway I met mike probably 1987 when I got out the army. When I went to work for Preston 151 trucking. Preston eventually put me through their program to get at the time my 3rd class license CDL today. So I ended up yard jockey on third shift. Moving trailers or dropping and hooking sets for road men. Mike was a ww2 vet he never talked about it and I never asked him. Mike used to tell me in humor that I saw Europe the easy way. And I would reply no doubt mister.

But mike was onery and we hit it off really well. As we had the same sense of humor. Mikes brother in law Glenn bought a vw diesel. And that bothered mike as in Glenn buying a nazi car. As Glenn probably wouldn’t care that I used to have a Kia Sportage. Glenn fought in Korea he was roadman Glenn. He would turn every night I think he was on a Jane lew West Virginia meet and turn it’s been years. Glenn would brag about the fuel mileage he was getting with his vw nazi diesel. So it hit me one night to start padding Glenn’s tanks as I as yard man. At times would fuel tractors for the road. I would maybe dump a gallon of diesel in the nazi vw diesel. And before you knew it Glenn was claiming he was getting like 80 mpg we would respond your full of shit.

Mike said boy you could aggravate the devil this is brilliant. Then I would stop and start padding Glenn’s tank. And one night he showed up in the family dodge volare station wagon. I asked Glenn where is the vw. He replied at dealership I told em fuel mileage is up and down check it out.

About 1988 I took a road bid instead of getting laid off. And my nerves were shot coming in one morning I 80 was shit and mike asked how was your night. Snow ice I said man I sucked the drivers seat up my ass I said I hid out at I 80 diner snow shoe Pennsylvania,waiting on plow and salt trucks called in told em I’m on the clock Pulling doubles. mike laughed he said boy at least you got common sense. Those men ww2 Korea Vietnam vets. Good men great teamsters they were the guys that taught me. Don’t put up with shit they never kissed ass did their jobs I miss em. These men I think just looked at being drafted ww2 Korea Vietnam. As a interruption in their lives. Get it over with and get home and start living.

As Glenn bitched about the diesel vw up and down fuel mileage.

3. --- aw, why not. My cousin has a vacation house in Vermont and an employee who is not too bright.

He bought a new wood stove for the house. Told Steve that the new stove is so efficient, you can load it, fire it up today and it will still have embers weeks later.

He invites Steve up for a weekend and calls the neighbor to light up the stove so it will be warm when they get there. This is standard practice.

Four hours later, they arrive at the place. Walk in and sure enough, there are warm embers in the stove.

"See, didn't I tell you it could keep going for weeks?

Steve: pausing for reflection -- "Aw, you can't fool me. You were up here last week."

A lady I worked with was being ragged on by a WWII vet for driving a Dodge Caravan powered by a Mitsubishi engine. He had served in the Pacific fleet. Dean was going on about how could she drive that car with an engine that powered the Japanese aircraft that attacked the fleet. Of course she was speechless. So I pipped up with, "Dean how about that GM pickup you are driving when they built the engines that powered the tanks trying to kill my Dad." It shut him up but I was wrong the tanks were powered with the Maybach engine build by Benz. I should've said powered the airplanes strafing our lines. GM and Ford got restitution with tax breaks because we bombed their plants during the war. Ain't nobody got clean hands. But your prank was sweet.

BTW my wife and I spent our only vacation in Ireland. Because of a transport accident our gasoline Ford Fiesta was unavailable. The Hertz agent was quite sorrowful and offered us a larger car at the same price. I had chosen the Fiesta because the roads where we were going were very narrow with high stone walls on either side in West County Cork. "Oh! West Cork! I do have a Fiesta van (only front seats) agency car that I can rent you. It is clean but won't be as nice as a usual rental." "That will be perfect, Mr. Hanrahan, as were are just the 2 of us." He then added, "It's a diesel and gets 80 MPH." I thought that was Irish bragging but it did. Even with the high price of fuel in Ireland with that kind of milage we drove cheaper than at home in Texas. And TEB was not padding our tank thank you very much.
