Should I extend?

Been a reservist for a few years, nearing my ETS. An extension for 6 years means a 20k bonus in a time when money is tight. Wife is avidly against it.

2. hah! It is. But so is like, getting the mortgage paid for almost a year,

, getting a deployment so I can have full veterans benefits, etc...

Nearing my ETS is making me start to wonder if I can survive without the military. Which is funny since my relationship with it has basically been at arms length the whole time.

6. A deployment is not exactly "arms length".

It seems like the smart long-view move, but if the spouse is against it, the spouse who has to keep house and cars and etc together while you're basking in the sand, well ....

Don't ask for our support. Ask your spouse, enlist her friends, convince her it's the wise move.

3. Can you be called for active duty in a combat

situation? If so I think you have done your duty.

I am a Vietnam veteran and feel we have earned our pay.

But very few benefits since I have no deployments makes me feel a bit inadequate.

11. 14 more years. Which is far less than the 20 before I enlisted. But still a long ways out.

Depends on your MOS but keeping her happy is usually your best bet.
Whew, 6 years. I did 1,214 days in the Cav and that was enough for me.

How old are you?

Are you going to be sent to the Infantry school? What rank are you?

15. Mid 30s. Sorry the unit will be infrantry but ill keep my current mos.

The 12k slot is in an infrantry unit. So no school or anything. E4

You know if you deploy with an Infantry unit. That you can be sent some place where the guys who are trying to kill the grunts will be targeting you also? Even if you’re on a combat base.


Maybe one of the younger guys who served more recently can chime in too.

Or the 400k sgli that my wife gets if i die? Okay I guess im seeing why the wife might have an issue here. The reaaons she doesnt like it are the reasons i want to re up. I might have other issues worth trying to resolve.

Can you expand on the last two sentences? You can DU mail if that’s more comfortable.


One thing I’d say is you may see or have to do stuff that will change you on a combat deployment. Right now you don’t have a lot of emotional rocks in your ruck. If you go with an Infantry unit you may get more than $12,000 worth.

19. If it helps, my wife hated my time in the reserves until the retirement checks started.
