Nine-year-old Edmund Lee is a great student. Hes a third-grader at Gateway Science Academy, a charter school in south St. Louis. Hes been a student there since kindergarten, and he wants to stay there, but an archaic law on the citys books wont allow him to attend the school anymore because hes black.
Everything was fine as long as Edmund and his family lived in the city of St. Louis. But their recent move to the suburbs means that Edmund cant attend his old school. Because of the way that St. Louis laws are written, suburban kids cannot attend city schools if they are black.
When I read the guidelines, I was in shock, Edmunds mother, LaShieka White, told Fox 2 Now. I was crying.
The law was passed decades ago and was meant to address school segregation.
School officials told the news station that because its the law, their hands are tied, but they welcome revisiting the rules.
White has launched a petition, asking lawmakers to take notice of her situation, adding that this isnt just about her son as she has heard from white students parents who were also unable to transfer to the school of their choice.
I dont want it to be just about an African-American boy, White told the news station. I want it to be about all children.
Tiffany Luis, Edmunds third-grade teacher, told Fox 2 that it would be sad not to see Edmund at the school next year.
To not see his face in the halls next year would be extremely sad, she said. The family is saying they want to stay. I dont understand why they cant.

My brother snuck into a Magnet school in 1985 from the burbs. There are ways around it.

Why does an archaic state law and even an illegal one need revisiting? I hope more info comes out about the white parents not able to transfer their kids, too. It seems a lot is left out.

White kids can exchange to inner city schools. Inner city black kids to Suburban.
In NY it was an exchange program.
