Study finds Black girls in Massachusetts 4x more likely to be disciplined at school than white class

Black girls in Massachusetts schools are nearly four times more likely to be disciplined than their white counterparts — often for similar behavior — a yearlong research project shows. “It demonstrates the devastating impact that the intersection of gender and racial discrimination is having on Black girls in Massachusetts schools,” said Deb Silva, executive director of Massachusetts Appleseed.

The project conducted by members of the Appleseed Justice Center, a nonprofit network throughout the U.S. and Mexico, examined disciplinary policies including suspensions, expulsions, referrals to law enforcement and school-based arrests during the 2015-2016 school year.

In Massachusetts, Black girls are roughly 3.9 times more likely to be disciplined than their white counterparts, according to the report.

Black female students are roughly five times more likely to receive at least one out-of-school suspension, and five times more likely to be expelled than their white classmates.

The report also shows Black girls are four times more likely to receive school-related arrests than white girls.
