Right Back at You: Tribes Fight Back Against the Rightwing Assaults on Deb Haaland

Responding to Senator Steve Daines (R-MT) publicly stated commitment to block the confirmation of the first Indigenous nominee for Secretary of the Interior, tribal organizations are launching a high-profile campaign to rally support for Congresswoman Deb Haaland (D-NM), President Biden’s pick to lead the Interior Department.

Beginning in Daines’ home state of Montana, the Global Indigenous Council (GIC) and Rocky Mountain Tribal Leaders Council (RMTLC) have billboards highlighting Haaland’s historic nomination being raised in two of the state’s main population centers, Billings and Great Falls.

Under the headline “The First People of this land. The last to receive the vote” the billboards proclaim “Our first Secretary of Interior” with a striking image of Haaland shot by nationally renowned photographer, Joseph Kayne.

“With his condescending and cynical remarks, Senator Daines may succeed in ginning up the MAGA base, but he also evokes the ‘Great White Father’ in his paternalistic attitude toward not only Representative Haaland but his Indigenous constituents. His buzzword of choice to undermine her is ‘radical’ and so we’ve given it right back to him,” said Rain Bear Stands Last, executive director of the Global Indigenous Council, in reference to print and digital ads that will also begin running in Montana this week before appearing in other states.

Misogynist, white supremacist. You can't expect anything better from him or his business partner, the body-slammer governor and former House rep. Montana is becoming Mississippi/Alabama and needs a serious criminal sweep through the state capitol for anti-American/anti-democratic insurrectionists... which is most of them.

but,the real back ground story is,the protection of a few Billionaires buying up land in Idaho and Montana from the BLM . Thus restricting you and everyone access to lakes, trails and rivers which are Public lands .

Look know further than the Wilks Brothers of Texas and Folley the owner of the Vegas Knights.

Yes,Montana has shifted far Right. Have not been to our Favorite Place on the Gallitin River for five years, but, the last time,it was posted no trespass even though fence ladders supplied by the BLM where in place for access to our fav fishing spot..

Bozeman is the nearest large city to me and I am not fond of the place at all and I've felt that way since I first went there in the mid 70s.

I hope your daughter votes.

Tester has some unfortunate ideas but for the most part he's the best we have right now since he's the only Democrat we have in national representation.

shi shi as they say. Reminds me of my one pass through Aspen.

Really pretentious. I think the Uni keeps it somewhat grounded.

I bet it was great 20-30 years ago - pre-"discovery."

By the way - daughter works for a nonprofit there that helps "vulnerable" youth (those who can't afford it, stuggling socially, at home, and otherwise) get outdoors in nature to help sustain their spirits.

The oil will be shipped offshore, US refineries can't handle it. The risk is horrific. It should never have been considered. It's crazy.

I've pointed out to friends in Alberta that this isn't the end of their prosperity, it's just a delay. The cheap and dirty solution to getting the oil out is simply too high risk. They're just going to have to rethink it. Rethinking it will keep the oil jobs in Canada.

This is a win-win for me. If a bunch of old greedheads continue throwing hissy fits to keep her from being approved, I get to keep her as my Congresswoman.

Keystone has always been a bad idea. The risk to the Aquifer is enormous and once tainted there's no bringing it back, nor the people and farmlands it supports. Another short-sighted decision by a bunch of greed heads.

As for Representative Haaland? She's the perfect choice for Interior, someone who actually respects the land and the people more than the investment class and oil companies.
