Has anyone read this? Or any other substantial work on the history of NYC? I'm looking for my next Audible.com purchase and have had a few NYC histories on my Wish List for a while. I'm especially hoping to find out if any of them have a Right Wing slant, so I can eliminate them from my list.
I've already read and loved The Power Broker: Robert Moses and the Fall of New York.
Also NYC-related non-fiction in my Wish List:
-Empire City: The Making and Meaning of the New York City Landscape
-Supreme City: How Jazz Age Manhattan Gave Birth to Modern America
-The Island at the Center of the World: The Epic Story of Dutch Manhattan
-The Race Underground: Boston, New York, and the Incredible Rivalry That Built America's First Subway
Thoughts?

(27,835 posts)... "The Island at the Center of the World" a couple of years ago, and I can't recommend it highly enough.
It is based on letters, journals, and reports written by Dutch settlers, and I learned so much about my home town that I never knew before - despite being an avid NY history buff for years.
It is truly an amazing glimpse into the beginnings of NYC, as well as upper NY state, Long Island, and Connecticut. It was particularly fascinating to hear descriptions of the area of Brooklyn where I come from, and being able to picture what it was like when first settled.
I absolutely guarantee you'll love every page - in fact, I plan on reading it again soon!

(10,482 posts)I've never lived in the city, but I've always had a fascination with it. I did just choose an unrelated book, but this will be my next.
