Watterson did a Spaceman Spiff comic with Breathed supplying the punchline in the last panel. They also carried on a mail correspondence with each other in the 80s with Watterson mailing Breathed insulting comics using Bloom County characters and Breathed doing the same with Calvin and Hobbes.

When he retired his post Bloom County strip, Outland. In the last book, he reflected on the various correspondences he had over the years - Leonard Nimoy asking for a copy of a strip of everyone playing Star Trek; Reagan's Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger asked for a strip where Opus is composing a poem and gets stuck on the last line and uses his name; Harper Lee of, "To Kill a Mockingbird," Garry Trudeau being upset with him for stealing jokes, which he admitted to when he started.

Here's the Watterson cartoon.
