Need help identifying an old sci fi or fantasy novel

only details I remember were one of the character left our earth/dimension/whatever and when he came back all his money, ids, etc had the printing backwards. I remember a kangaroo also.

Not much to go on, but I'm sure someone knows what I am talking about.

...flipped over in a fourth spatial dimension?

I think in real life if that happened you'd die of starvation. Something about some chemicals(?) that help with digestion having different effects if their 'handedness' is different.
