I believe that we need some humor (or in this case really bad Dad Jokes) to make the rest of the news a bit less burdensome.

I have been on DU since 2006. I was a grad student when I joined..I am middle-aged now..I find myself drifting over to Pets and Humor more and more..it is not as if there is ever any good news and usually if anything good happens there is a backlash..I am old, tired and creaky ;-/..I just want me some cat pics and corny jokes at least half the time. The other half I vaguely try to be dutifully informed..or something...
