the black death

the dead and the dying lie tangled and mingled
drained of life and hope denial the loudest plea
immersed in the lying those lame and wrinkled
movements reach and grope yet no power to flee
as the sights and the smells cannot be separated
vision sunken in corruption revolting even ghosts
priests cast useless spells the devil is interrogated
and before the eruption come the insolent boasts
as ceaseless groans penetrate a mourning chorus
among mewling whimpers echo the lost prayers
the suffering to demonstrate that god ignores us
now the living live scarred in the guilt of survival
shedding memories is hard after death’s carnival
