to sing for a dying dog

to sing for a dying dog

when my dog was dying i wanted to scream at the gods
filled with a liquid blackness that poured from the heart
standing over him crying as all hope was made by frauds
lost in a lethargic slackness thought in one shattered part
first almost too softly to be heard came whispered songs
slowly as the soul grew braver the words arrived stronger
so all the memory were stirred from where each belongs
the taste of sorrow lost its flavor as death lost its hunger
sitting still on the cold floor giving the pointless caresses
unwiped tears cling to the face a voice trembles and stops
stand before death’s open door life punishes and blesses
too late for one last embrace when the final curtain drops
in quavering tones i sang songs to placate a spirit leaving
empties a soul of what it longs to bring about the grieving
