soul

after the years of searching at last a soul is found
hidden among the unexpected debris and flotsam
the waves create the lurching dull uneven sound
upon the sea to be respected on surface or bottom
as soon as the soul is visible decay starts to set in
a spot of mold appears the stench begins to arise
the spirit and the visceral can never mingle again
as a list of little lost fears emerges and draws flies
a fragile delicate device dried wane and withered
shows the marks of time mere touch turns to dust
the throw of cosmic dice random yet embittered
preserved in bitter brine riddled in rot and in rust
simple small insignificant washed up on the beach
shallow stubborn intransigent always out of reach
