DENVER (AP) - San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey has shingles and is out of the starting lineup for Wednesday night's game at Colorado.
Manager Bruce Bochy said Posey contracted a painful rash Sunday night under his left armpit, on his left side and his back. He'll be available to hit, but Hector Sanchez got his second straight start.
After playing three games at Arizona, Posey got the day off Monday at Coors Field, part of a plan to ease him back after he missed most of last season with a broken leg from a home-plate collision in May.
Brought on by the same virus that causes chickenpox, shingles is a blistering skin rash most common in older people. It usually ends after four weeks, but one in five victims develop long-term nerve pain.

(64,933 posts)It always bothered him afterwards. Unfortunately he is no longer alive (not due to shingles, though I sometimes if the scars on his head were part of the reason that he is not alive.)

(31,194 posts)and could have played today. At age 25 I'd want to speculate Posey might be strong enough to whether the discomfort, but then, never having shingles I don't know.
But imagine playing in summer ... with the heat and humidity. That could be hell.
Poor Buster!

(9,709 posts)The Giants may have to DL him...bring up the automatic out (Whiteside) since they'll need a backup to Sanchez,..and send down somebody.

(38,487 posts)Both excellent with plenty of pop. Flores raking this year.

(9,709 posts)if Buster can't go, Hector Sanchez will do the job. The Giants are rich in catching, what with Posey, Sanchez, Tommy Joseph, and Andrew Susac...that first two are obviously on the ML team, while Joseph and Susac are both rated in the top 6 of Giants prospects by Baseball America...

(31,194 posts)Damn, I hope so. Watching the Rockies game right now -- the team is a lot weaker without him.

(9,709 posts)From everything I've read most cases of shingles are in individuals over 60. This isn't a very good sign....and even if Buster is ready to go tomorrow, he won't be himself, just because of the medication alone. Maybe the Giants just ought to DL him and make sure he is okay..

I love this match up! The Mormon vs. The Pot Head.
Going the Rox' way so far.

(31,194 posts)BTW, Krukow apparently played with shingles too. Bochy mentioned it on the pregame show.
No, it's not a good sign. Especially considering the how physical it is to play catcher.

(20,365 posts)But I'm a whoooole lot older than Posey. I've heard nothing but nasty shit concerning this disease.

(16,113 posts)If I remember, one of the things they used to treat shingles was corticosteroids, but I don't think that's used much anymore.

(4,528 posts)If he can play tomorrow then his is not bad. First you take an anti viral treatment. I must have lost 15 lbs. It only is on 1/2 of your body. His is down lower which is not too bad. Mine was in my ear and on my face. I spoke to a women and she lost sight in one of her eyes when she had it.
My face was numb for 2 years. After I got well I had to take steroids for 6 weeks to heal. I also put an anti arthritis pain reliever on my face.
Like I said if he can play then his is not too bad.

(31,194 posts)"other reasons" according to WebMD.
You've had to have had chicken pox some time in your life for the varicella zoster virus to become active and manifest as shingles.
You can't catch shingles from someone else who has shingles. But there is a small chance that a person with a shingles rash can spread the virus to another person who hasn't had chickenpox and who hasn't gotten the chickenpox vaccine.
Hard to believe it's fashion for many parents to forego getting their children immunized against many diseases, including this one.
