Tim Tebow hype is surpassing John Elway

DENVER - We've all heard the hype surrounding Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow lately, but on Thursday night a well-respected sports reporter made perhaps one of the biggest claims yet.

Mike Klis, Denver Post Broncos beat writer, says John Elway was never as big at any one time as Tebow is right now.

Whether that's true or not, one thing's for sure, the hysteria over Tebow is at an all new level and will grow even more as this weekend's big game approaches between the Broncos and the Patriots.

2. I dunno -- Elway was pretty scrutinized back in the day

There is, generally speaking, a much larger hype machine now than there was when Elway was a young quarterback--but Elway got a lot of hype back in the day, as well as a lot of scrutiny. It wasn't all positive hype, either, and he drew attacks just like Tebow does, but for different reasons. (His stated refusal to play for the Colts, which prompted the trade to Denver in the first place, was a big deal at the time. I remember Bradshaw was still ripping him for it in his first year as an analyst. And while the Denver media has been boosting Tebow since training camp, the media was not as kind to Elway back in the day. I remember him drawing criticism in the papers for his choice of candy to hand out to trick-or-treaters at Halloween.
