Pablo Sandoval to have hand surgery

San Francisco Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval has fractured the hamate bone in his left hand and has been placed on the 15-day disabled list.

Sandoval believes he actually hurt the wrist on Sunday, manager Bruce Bochy told reporters. He returned to work Tuesday after a day off and reported soreness in the hand.

An X-ray Tuesday did not reveal the break, but Sandoval, who came out of Wednesday's game, then underwent an MRI exam and CT scan that showed the fracture. He will have surgery Friday at Stanford and is expected to miss four to six weeks.
