Houston Astros fire Bo Porter

snip-

The Astros fired manager Bo Porter on Monday, saying the dismissal had less to do with the team's 59-79 record than the need for "new direction" and a "united message throughout the entire organization."

Porter was in his second season with the Astros and was succeeded by interim manager Tom Lawless, who worked in Houston's minor league system. Lawless' first game in charge is Tuesday night at home against the Los Angeles Angels.

Bench coach Dave Trembley also was let go.

Porter joined the Astros after working as a third-base coach for the Washington Nationals. The Astros went a franchise-worst 51-111 in his first season for their third straight 100-loss season.

Rumor has it that it's a "kill or be killed" move by GM Jeff Luhnow when he became aware of closed-door discussions between Porter and team owner Jim Crane. Crane apparently supported the move. Stay tuned.

He was actually doing pretty decently with the players he had to work with, and the Astros have been looking a lot more competitive in recent months than they did at the start of the season. When this season first started and also all of last season, they were nothing but doormats. I remember when the A's were owning them all the time, but now the Astros kinda turned the table on them. They're a much better team than their record indicates, but I think their real problem probably lies with the ownership of the team--not so much the coaches or players.
