I will say it again, someone needs to come clean and face the music. Tom or them equipment guys. The longer they deny the worse its gonna be

(9,002 posts)That might make things awkward at Kraft's next party.

(34,825 posts)I agree; two games, fine, maybe a draft pick. Whoop-de-fuckin-doo.

(16,113 posts)they determined its "more likely than not" that he knew about ball deflation? I don't buy it for a second. Looking at past suspensions for other "on the field" issues, they've never come anywhere close to doing this, even when they've had players intentionally try to injure other players.

(22,340 posts)Nothing happened to them, right? Right?
The NFL dropped the ball with Rice, overreacted with Peterson, and both were for off the field issues. This is deliberate cheating on the field that is continued. Somethings going to happen. If not, then the rules don't mean dick and that will have been made clear.

(16,113 posts)served anywhere close to a full seaons. Vilma was given a full season suspension and played in 11 games. Something is going to happen, but if you think they're going to spend a player for a full season that they determined "more likely than not" knew about what was going on, you're nuts.
In any case, if you think the NFL will give a longer suspension to Brady for deflated footballs then they gave to guys who beat their wives and children, and this will HELP their PR, you haven't been paying much attention. I'm sure someone has already written an OP ED just waiting for the final details about how the NFL considers deflated footballs a much more serious an infraction than domestic violence, and that's going to make the NFL's problems worse, not better.

(49,533 posts)It's not a jury trial where you need 12 unanimous votes. It's more like a civil trial with a "preponderance of evidence."
And fuck, those text messages made it pretty clear to anyone not blinded by Pats glasses that Brady ordered the equipment guys to deflate.
hughee99
(16,113 posts)Or the ones that Brady sent to the ball guy AFTER the story broke?
If you think they're going to give Brady a longer suspension for this then they did any of the players involved the bountygate scandal, you're the one with the "special" glasses on.

(41,692 posts)Those emails are pretty damning.
hughee99
(16,113 posts)None of those players actually served a year suspension and the only guy who got one (Vilma) ended up playing 11 of the 16 games that season.
Look, I'm not saying Brady is innocent. I'm not even saying the league isn't going to punish him, but do you really believe the nfl will suspend one of their biggest starts for a FULL SEASON based on something they couldn't even prove after 4 months of investigation? Such a penalty for something they couldn't even prove is going to cause serious issues with the players union, which is not something the NFL wants. And do you think that if the NFL suspends someone for a full season for PROBABLE ball deflation after suspending a guy who admitted to beating his wife for TWO games, and suspending guys who were caught and admitted to a cash bounty system for 6 games or less?
I'm sure the NFL will come down with harsh penalties on the Patriots for "institutional failure", despite the fact that the report doesn't seem to implicate any of the Pats upper management, but the idea that Brady will sit an entire season isn't based in reality.
trumad
(41,692 posts)A whole year aint gonna happen.
hughee99
(16,113 posts)that Brady and the Pats may roll over and not make an issue of it with the players union. It also "deflates" the argument that the NFL punishes ball deflation more than domestic violence, which is something they desperately don't want to bring to the front and center again.
The team will get a fine and maybe lose a draft pick as well, which is how the league will try to make the punishment look worse than it is. Sure, the team cares about the draft pick, but Kraft can find half a million in his luxury box couch cushions.

trotsky
(49,533 posts)The betting line is probably right. 3-4 games.
But I think he DESERVES to be banned from the sport for life.
hughee99
(16,113 posts)Given the penalties they've given to players for things like domestic violence and intentionally hurting players, I don't think he deserves a full season, although given the penalties for a little bit of weed, it would seem like it's not enough.
Do you really believe this deserves a LIFETIME ban? Really?
As a little exercise, try to name all the NFL players that have been banned for life in the last 60 years.
In the last 60 years, they've had gambling, dogfighting, DUI's that resulted in death, accidental shootings, threatening people's lives, stomping on players heads, countless numbers of domestic violence and assault incidents, and intentionally trying to injure opposing players occur.
How many of those incident resulted in a lifetime ban for a player?
trotsky
(49,533 posts)Many other players, for incidents off the field, should also have been given such a ban. I wish the Bountygate participants had gotten lifetime bans, too.
With Brady, we're looking at intentionally breaking rules in order to gain a competitive advantage. Cheating. The integrity of the sport itself is on the line. There's no law that says the NFL has to remain the most popular sport in the country. Brady is of course a golden boy and part of the brand. But if your brand also says that you can break rules and not face any serious consequences, well fuck, why not break rules? Especially if it helps you get to and win a Super Bowl?
If your argument depends on comparing your guy to men who literally raped and murdered other human beings, you've lost.
hughee99
(16,113 posts)If you think the NFL suspensions have been disappointing in the past, be prepared because its about to happen again.
Just curious, do you feel the same way (lifetime bans) for other on-the-field violations for stick um, corked bats, pine tar, doctoring baseballs, hockey sticks with an illegal curve, OVER inflation of footballs, cleats that are too long or illegally warming up footballs during games?

(12,047 posts)Brady suspension will be announced next week
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has reportedly decided to suspend Patriots quarterback Tom Brady , with an announcement coming next week and the only remaining question being how many games Brady will miss.

I really don't care about suspending Brady either way - though I'd be shocked if it were for more than a couple games. I just love reading the texts... that's entertainment!
Have any of the late night chuckleheads done dramatic readings? Easy laughs...
