(38,458 posts)Secretariat was hand ridden in the Belmont. Actually we'll never know. Both great horses.
I hope I am around to see AP's offspring in action.

....Turcotte hustled Secretariat into the first turn and Sham was breathing down his neck. I've heard from old-time Belmont people that the track was hard as an interstate in '73, too.
It's fun and interesting to compare horses from different eras. Secretariat was great. AP is great. Spectacular Bid was the greatest horse.

(32,084 posts)But, Secretariat was a once in a lifetime horse. Amarican Pharoah is pretty damn special, too. However, I don't know if he's really at Secretariat level.

(42,998 posts)Will never be matched. However for people like me, who were too young to see Secretariat or remember AP's Belmont run is the greatest Belmont /TC performance we've seen

(1,607 posts)When American Pharoah became just the 12th horse to sweep the Triple Crown one year after Steve Coburn, co-owner of California Chrome, proclaimed the feat impossible much of the talk centered not on the colts spectacular accomplishment, but rather on his place in history.
The Wall Street Journal even released a video that proved Secretariats time of 2:24 in the 1973 Belmont Stakes was faster than American Pharoahs time of 2:26.65 in this years edition of the Test of Champions. (Im anxiously awaiting a follow-up video confirming that Ted Williams MLB-leading .406 average in 1941 was higher than the .341 mark of last years batting champ Jose Altuve.)
Look, I get it: We love to compare athletes of different eras its one of the joys of being a sports fan. Heck, in the last few weeks alone, Ive heard more arguments for and against LeBron James and Michael Jordan as the best NBA player ever than Ive seen Caitlyn Jenner stories. Thats a lot of arguments.
But why do the horse racing debates have to be so, well, dumb?
