Boxing (June 20)

There are three good boxing cards on television tonight. The best fight, at least on paper, is the Broner vs Porter bout.

In the afternoon-evening, I'll be hanging out with Marvis Frazier and Larry Holmes. There is a good chance that they'll be here tonight, to watch the fights. That said, if any of you are interested, come on over!

It's great that they're bringing boxing back to non-pay cable channels, but the announcers? I don't know. They ain't Teddy and Joe, that's fo' sho'! And how did they manage to sew up so many different networks at once?!

to Showtime, I remember writing that the sport was going to make major changes; that move from HBO to Showtime was the tip of the ice cube. A lot had to do with "behind-the-scenes" changes that weren't getting press. But, like any system, it can be compared to a mobile hanging over a baby's crib -- when one piece moves, all others must adjust.

The answer to your question is, quite simply, Al Haymon. Some people consider him the modern version of the old monopoly-holders that damaged the sport. I think that, in cooperation with Mayweather, he's making outstanding fights, and equally important, paying the men who fight.

In my own admittedly obnoxious opinion, I think they'd do much better having me at ringside, as one of the announcers. No agenda here. Just someone who knows and loves the sport.

And if they paired you with Al Michaels, you could counter his right-wing barbs with lefty shots of your own!
