S.F. Giants trade for Brewers' reliever Will Smith

The Giants filled one of their biggest needs Monday, acquiring left-handed setup man Will Smith from the Brewers, but the cost was enormous.

A source confirmed the Giants will send Milwaukee 2015 first-round draft pick, right-hander Phil Bickford, and catcher Andrew Susac.

Bickford, 21, has struck out 105 batters in 93 innings at two Class A levels this season and was considered a future cornerstone for the relation. That the Giants would deal him for a reliever suggests how much the Giants felt they needed to shore up the bullpen to make a title run in 2016.

The Giants will have three more years of control of Smith, a 27-year-old Georgia native who has swing-and-miss stuff but whose numbers are off this year after he incurred an odd knee injury in spring training while trying to change shoes. Last year he struck out 12.9 batters per nine innings, this year 9.0.

I'm okay with losing Bickford. Smith may not be perfect but the Giants need an arm desperately and the pickings were slim. You have to go for pennant.

The Giants agreed to a trade that landed them left-hander Matt Moore just before Monday's 4 p.m. ET non-waiver Trade Deadline. San Francisco parted with infielder Matt Duffy, as well as prospects Lucius Fox and Michael Santos.

Moore has one of the most affordable contracts in the Majors and is under control via club options through the next three seasons. The 27-year-old lefty is 7-7 with a 4.08 ERA in 21 starts this season after experiencing injuries the previous two years.

Duffy, who is recovering from a left Achilles strain and is currently on a rehab assignment, is batting .253/.313/.358 with 11 doubles, two triples, four home runs and 21 RBIs in 70 games. Fox, a shortstop, ranked No. 3 on MLBPipeline's list of the Top 30 Giants prospects, while Santos, a right-hander, ranked 24th.

The Nunez trade made Duffy expendable. Moore and Smith are both under contract for three years.
