The incidents from the Sports Group have been a topic of conversation amongst the hosts. There seems to be some confusion about what this forum is about. I think a slight change to the SOP will clear things up.
Here is the current Statement of Purpose: "Discuss all things related to sports."
Here is the proposed "Statement of Purpose: "Discuss all things related to sports. In the Sports group we like to go at it like rabid dogs. Anything goes except bigotry and mean spiritedness."
Please let me know what you think about the new SOP. Please let me know if any changes should be made.

(9,002 posts)I see very little instances of mean spiritnedness. Hopefully, we get more folks to hang.

(9,002 posts)Can we get rid of joey's pinpointed thread at the top? It's most definately driving a lot of potential groupites away.
I took it off.

(35,773 posts)Uh, if that is the goal...
Thanks for taking on the host role!

(20,436 posts)I'd hate to include more exceptions, but some might be necessary.

(33,150 posts)Define mean-spiritedness. It's a little open-ended, IMO.

(85,151 posts)I don't want to go through a list of guidelines. Maybe there's a better way to say it?

(9,709 posts)but we need the same level of tolerance we had in the DU2 Sports Forum. If you feel this SOP change is a step in that direction..fine.

(18,161 posts)I hope so.
It's also meant to reassure DU that bigotry will not be tolerated and to tell the juries and other outsiders that if they find people fighting in here, it's OK if it's within the customs of the sports forum.

(76,706 posts)We can just all learn as we go. I don't think your idea has ny real downside.

(37,540 posts)Every forum can have different standards of acceptable decorum, I think - if the majority concur. The Sports group is certainly a place where flaming is a feature, not a bug.

(6,664 posts)Except you might want to add sexism as some people don't consider biogtry and sexism the same thing.

(58,179 posts)Might need clearing up. I'll burn this motherfucker down before I'm anything other than cruel and savage to a Jets fan.

(85,151 posts)The admins have changed the default setting for Latest. It is now Main-Political. This excludes Sports from the latest. I will still try to find out how to make this change.

(65,729 posts)I think that is what caused a lot of confusion the first few days.

(85,151 posts)I'm saying that we might be OK now except for the juries.

At least Roller Derby you can knock the other girls down

(6,359 posts)I'm all for banning "bigotry."
I endorse expanding ban that explicitly to cover sexism. Of course, we can have huge debates about what's on which side of that line; My standard would be that the women here do not find a hostile environment. I don't think we're there right now.
"Mean spiritedness" does include the can of worms known as divining a poster's intent. I think it's fine to post threads that will tick off someone else because the OP mocks their favorite team or athlete. That's the kind of "go at it like rabid dogs" stuff that belongs.
I think it's not fine to post a thread simply to aggravate someone who has a different idea about what should be in bounds here. Tease someone about who they root for, their tastes in sport, etc. but don't be obnoxious for the sake of staking a claim to a perceived right to be obnoxious.
HuckleB
(35,773 posts)Sexism should be included in bigotry, but it appears that things to be made more specific.
