Bad, bad news. That kid was a huge part of the future for the Vikes.

(29,929 posts)Minnesota Vikings quarterback Teddy Bridgewater suffered a dislocated knee and torn ACL at practice Tuesday, the team announced in a release.
The injury announcement came about two hours after an emotional scene unfolded at Vikings practice when Bridgewater went down with a non-contact injury that ended the session after just 30 minutes. Zimmer said the 23-year-old had to be sedated before undergoing an MRI at the hospital.
When asked if there was a chance Bridgewater could play this season, Zimmer responded, "It doesn't look good right now."
"We're not going to stick our heads in the sand, tuck our tail between our legs," Zimmer said about the bind Bridgewater's injury could put the team in. "We're not going to make excuses.

(8,249 posts)you cant stick your head in the sand or your tail between your legs, because your head is stuck up your ass.
Cancelling the practice sends the message that your season ended right there. Stupid move

(9,527 posts)Calling Bridgewater a star is a stretch. He's a decent quarterback in a system that doesn't fit his strengths because Norvasc Turner wants to go deep, even though Bridgewater isn't a good deep ball thrower.
If your players are upset, giving them time to process is a good thing, especially if it's just practice. I've seen entire gyms go silent over what ended up being a badly sprained ankle or a cut requiring a few stitches.

(8,249 posts)I was really looking forward to seeing this young player this season, as I love the competitive nature of our rivalry.
Cancelling the practice seemed to me like they were giving up, or unable to cope with a thing that is an unfortunate part of the game.
In addition, they should have gotten their back-up some reps, pronto. That's what practice is for.

(29,929 posts)These players live, work, and train together so it isn't rare you see this sort of thing.
I think it is a bit of an overreaction to say cancelling a practice, one practice is giving up. We're talking about practice, not a game.

(8,249 posts)Let me try a different approach: can you cite me one instance in high school, college or professional football, baseball, basketball where a practice was cancelled after just starting because one player got injured? not from weather like lightening
Let me ask you another question: Your starting QB goes down the week before season starts, dont you think it would be wise to get his back up some more practice with the entire starting squad? What happens when you're out of sync as a team on offense? More injuries are a possibility.
Let me ask you another question: when your players are reacting viscerally to such an event as this injury, throwing up, weeping, turning away and swearing, do think it wise to say "OK boys that's a wrap, see you next week"? Or would it be better to show some leadership, get the team back on the horse and soldier on, like a true leader should? that's what I mean by unable to cope
Speaking of overreacting, I think, and I guess its just me, that the coach handled this a bit overboard and it sounds to me from the quotes in your link that he may be reacting to cover with all this "head in the sand" and "tail between the legs" crap. Cuz thats what happened yesterday when he called it quits and went a weeping on TV
I mean, what would Bud Grant have done?

(29,929 posts)I did football practice in high school and the coaches would seemingly be trying to give us heat stroke, including discouraging water breaks. Id expect pro coaches to be a little more professional.
I do not think "next man up" is lost on him as he clearly talks about using other players to try to win games, he has the right attitude. Going into the 4th week of preseason the main goal for coaches is to try to come out if it healthy. After Thursday he'll have over a week to gameplan for their next opponent. Who the backup is may be undecided between Shaun Hill and rookie Slave or they may trade.
One afternoon practice for the 4th preseason won't make or break a season unless someone gets hurt.
The scene in practice is also a similar scene you see in games from both teams when a player is severely injured.

(22,340 posts)half the damn state would shut down for at least a day. Give these professionals time to deal with their emotions from a very serious injury to a colleague and friend. I'm sure they will do all they can to get the replacement ready to go. One day won't kill that.
