NYS Golden Gloves

On Saturday, my son fights in the finals of the upstate Golden Gloves. He's looked very good in training. Most of his sparring has been with another young man, who lives a few miles away, who is also in the finals at a lower weight class. We'll be heading to Buffalo on Friday afternoon, and competing Saturday evening.

I'm confident that my son is 100% ready. It's curious that I get nervous before his fights, which is very different from when I used to fight. In my old age, I just hope that no one gets hurt .....or I'd suggest, "break his jaw."

...thinking about the things we did when we were young, without batting an eye, and the things we cringe about when they do them.

The perspective of learning we're not invincible, I suppose.

I remember riding home from a Syracuse card with my brothers. A friend of ours had died in the ring. I was thinking, "Poor Frank!," but not connecting the fact that I faced the same risk when I fought. Being a teenager is a unique experience.

Not much this way. Overall, I'm just enjoying the slow pace of old age. Watching a flock of wild turkeys out on my lawn every day. And training my son. How are things your way?

I saw a car pull into the bottom of my driveway; a woman got out, did something, got back in, and left. It turned out she had "dropped off" a kitten.

As fate would have it, this kitten was a welcome entity. I've never encountered a kitten/cat with such a wild imagination. Plus it gets along fine with the other cats and dogs.

Recently, I was watching three deer feast upon the corn & sunflower seeds out on my lawn. Then, I noted they were on alert. It took a few seconds before I saw the kitten approaching them, slowly, in a low crouch. Although the deer could see it was but a small ball of fur, two took off when the kitten sped up, as if it was about to capture one for a meal. The third one trotted towards the kitten, who turned sideways, arched her back, and took off in another direction at an incredible rate of speed.

I was laughing out loud, when my older son asked what was so funny? I told him, and said I was surprised the two were spooked by such a small cat. He reminded me the cat is a predator, with the same smell -- and making the same sounds -- as a bobcat, etc. And that site was but one sense, along with smell and hearing, that allow deer to survive.

One of.my smallest ones is like that. Hattie is about 8 months old. Found her at 6 weeks. When the cats are on t he patio and a dog comes by the others run, she checks him out. I know what you mean about them being tiny predators. Th ey get into the same stalking position big cats do when hunting, although mine only hunt insects that way and sometimes toy mice

My son's opponent decided yesterday that he doesn't want to box my boy. Hence, on Saturday, my son is awarded the championship without a bout in the finals.

This isn't that surprising. A while back, an opponent who watched my son warming up, opted to quietly get dressed, and exit the arena without telling anyone.

Ah, boxing. Curious sport.

who had 25 pounds on him in the 3rd round. That's pretty impressive.

What are your predictions for Anthony Joshua vs. Wladimir Klitschko?

an interesting fight. It's definitely good for the heavyweight division, which has recently become much more competitive. I tend to favor youth over age in this one. Klitschko has never had a great chin, and this young man has real punching power. At the same time, I don't rule out a Klitschko win, if he can bring it to the middle-to-late rounds without being hurt. I watched their pre-fight interview show -- similar to what Max does on HBO -- and thought the old man got inside Joshua's head a little bit.

Coming from a small town, my son has had the same experience my brother and I had: going to people's home town, and fighting their top guys, even at a serious weight disadvantage. He's sparring a couple of MMA fighters who weighed 260 and 275 pounds, and had to hold back on his punches. So the undefeated fellow who had 25 lbs on him was acceptable to him. In fact, he's hoping for a rematch soon.
